Lonesome George

Hello from North Carolina.

Inherited an 1860 Spencer Carbine from my late Father ( not a family piece, just one he purchased ).

Serial Number 15941

Starting down the road to learning about it, and found this super informative site.

Look forward to a lot of reading, and apologies for questions, and thankful for help and advice.

Take care, and stay safe.

Howdy, Pard! Is that an original or a reproduction?  Are you intending to shoot it?  Have you a centerfire conversion breachblock for it? What caliber?  Never apologize for asking questions. That's how you learn...the easy way!  ;)  We'll all do our best to answer them.
Ride easy, stay alert and stay well!

Thanks.  As far as I know and can tell, this one is an original.  My Father picked it up in the 1980 time frame at a Gun show.    It just lived on his display shelf for 40 years basically until he passed, and has lived above my mantle, until I got the bug to investigate it.

Given the markings, and semi-low serial number I presume it is a 56-56, in the 52 caliber.       And yes, I would actually like to shoot it.  The bore is a 6 groove rifled bore, and seems pretty clean for the age.

I have started looking at the various centerfire conversion blocks, but don't have one yet.    Trying to start slow.

Lonesome G,

I checked on your serial # 15941 - it MAY have been issued to Company K, 11th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry on November 14, 1864.  Go slow with the modifications . . . check out the SORI thread for answers to any questions you might have, or post them on SSS.
