1878 Colt 44WCF

This 1878 Colt 7 1/2 " 44 wcf circa 1883 arrived today . I am very happy to be its caretaker for now . The action locks-up tight works great in both DA and SA . Bore is very strong looks great . The fine fellow that sold it to me also sent the Colt Factory letter . I like it .,,,DT

Very nice!  I've always kind of wanted one of those, but have never even handled one and don't know if I could reach the trigger!

It does have a different feel than the SAA ,The Birdshead grip helps . Long stroke trigger pull in DA but not bad at all in SA . ,,,DT

Dusty, strange but true.  I have a 7 1/2" .44-40 etched panel single action that was shipped October 30, 1883.  I have a 5 1/2" .38-40 SA that was shipped October 30, 1900.  Looks like October was a good month for shipping Colts

Wow Buck that is amazing that we have two Colt's shipped one day after the other . And then your 1900 yr. shipped on the same day as your 1883 . Do you know how many were shipped with the 1883 yr. Colt ? The 1883 DA Colt's  letter say's  20  like it shipped in the order on October 31 1883 . ,,,,,DT

Dusty, There were 50 guns total in the same order with my 7 1/2" SA.  Shipped to Simmons in St. Louis.

      Greetings!

   I've always like the looks of the 1878 DAA / DA Frontier... About ten or so years ago, I found an Colt's "1902 Philippine" in Albuquerque
for less than the price of an Uberti SAA. Most likely a Bannerman. It came with a "cowboy" holster. I got it home, and loaded up some
cartridges with the Ideal #454190 ( WW / Range Scrap ), 35gr GOEX FFg, and a Magnum Primer. Even with its 'salt&pepper' bore, it shot
very well, giving "minute of coffee-can" at twenty yards offhand. Double Action was smooth. I have since longed for an 1878 replica...
   Excellent reading can be had via Wilkerson's, "Colt's Double Action Revolver Model of 1878"; a LOT of data, and graphics. The author
states that a few 1878's were sold with the odd, oversized trigger & guard, probably to use up extra government contract parts.

Sweet! How does it shoot?

Finally  shot the old Colt 78 , used .427 lead RNFP SPG lube 34 Gr, 2ff Bp. Starline brass CCI cap . It shot very well for me on the trigger . At 10 yds .the five shot groups were about two in. cluster ,  a bit high and right of POA.  Felt really Cool shooting that old Colt .,,,DT

None of the above Dusty.  A while back there was a "steampunkish" Sherlock Holmes thingie on the tube in which a really really bad (and really good looking) gal steps out on a Balcony with a pair of 7 1/2 inch Nickel Thunderers and empties them into her victim.  Great scene.  Wish them two Thunderers were MINE

Heck, wish I knew where they (movie folks) got those two 1878s.  they would be SO KOOL!!!
