"Let's jump in the car and get lost!"

I looked at Camille like she'd finally come unwrapped.

Then I considered what a beautiful day it was. I grabbed a jacket and the camera and we hit the road.

An hour later we found ourselves in the historic village of Gold Hill, sittin' at Miss Ruby's having a superb lunch.

GOLD HILL, once called the 'Prince of the Atlantic'. The richest gold mining town east of the Mississippi. Located in the heart of the Carolina Gold Rush Territory, in Rowan County,  North Carolina, USA.

Gold was first discovered here in 1823 following a state geological survey which identified three major mineral veins.  Of the three minerals gold was found to be the more prominent and promising.   But it wasn't until much later that the region realized its' full potential in the gold mining industry.

Gold Hill began emerging from a rough pioneer stage in the late 1840's into a town of economic and social importance. Letters written among friends document great parties being held at Gold Hill to which everyone of social importance attended. The events were labeled as Grand Affairs. It was an honor to attend and be in the company of the elite and fashionable residents of Gold Hill. Tickets were purchased in advance of the events.

I took a few photos of the village all decked out for Christmas ... http://www.kimandbarrymckenzie.com/Gold_Hill/index.htm

The first discovery of gold in America was just a few miles down the road at Reeds gold mine.

What a great place. Thanks for posting all the photos. It kind of reminds me of Genoa, NV. I love those historic places that are still functioning communities.

Kinda reminds me of Zoar and Schoenbrun around here, Stump. If'n you and Camille ever get over this a way for vacation, you might like Amish country a county or two southwest of me here.......Buck 8) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....
