The officers carried pistols and swords while the bayonet is the common riflemans sword. There is certainly a cruel elegance to the long bayonet mounted on a rifle. It just looks more lethal than a short one does.

My understanding is in the open the advantage was with guy that had the reach in a bayonet duel.

Mausers Gewehr 98 OAL with its short bayonet matched the longer 05 & 07 US on the M17 & 03's
The Japanese Arisaka with its bayonet had a greater reach....

Big long pointy thing is hard to maneuver inna Trench.  Some snug is.  Practical may not be.

There?s a scene where the Brits are attacking the bridge at Remagen in A Bridge Too Far and the officer blows his whistle to start the assault. One of the defending german soldiers asks what that was and his officer replies ?fools courage?. Hanging a bayonet on your rifle and running towards Maxim guns, same thing.

A favourite tool of WWI Canadian Shock Troops for trench raids was a spade with a sharpened edge.

In the movie "The Light Horse" you see Australian Mounted Infantry using their long Lee-Enfield bayonets as swords.

"Light Horse" were mounted infantry. Armed with rifles, not carbines, and no sword. The real attack the movie portrays was a tactical opportunity too good to miss. They drew their bayonets and charged. BTW; there is a photo of the charge, but it MIGHT HAVE BEEN a recreation done later when it was realized what a momentous event had just occurred.

The SMLE (Short Model Lee-Enfield or the more colloquial "Smellie") replaced all carbines in the British Army upon it's adoption. It was deemed sufficiently short enough for mounted use.

The Smellie was likely one of the best, if not the best bolt action military rifle ever. The Mauser '98 a close second but for it's 5 rd magazine capacity.

If I recall, the men and horses were on their last legs due to water deprivation.

Had the attack failed, the surviving horses would likely have been put down.

That was the punchline to the attack, succeed and save the wells or die. A man can do a lot when his back is against the wall. Also the belief by the Turks that the Lighthorse would at some point dismount and fight as infantry so they were not prepared for the cavalry charge. But this is probably Hollywood bs. Makes for a good story though and very exciting film footage.

It is ....  it does not mean short magazine ....   Short, Magazine lee Enfield   as the earlier rifle was a long Lee or MLE

The correct nomenclature is: Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield, Mk. I. Thereafter there were several Mks, culminating with the Mk. VI.

The most common Mk. used in WWI was the SMLE, Mk III* which eliminated the long range dial sights and and the magazine cut-off.

The so-called Long Lee-Enfield was officially: the Lee-Enfield Magazine Rifle, Mk I, culminating with the Mk. I*.
