Whilst slumming over on that "other wire," kept running into comments about a Leather Barrel Wrap for the 1860 Henry.  Couldn't figure out what they were talking about and the comments included "recently approved by SASS."  Never heard of it.  Some confused.

Finally went up to their "stickies" and found a new entry about a newly approved "safety" addition for the Henry.  Seems folks have been whining about "Hot Barrel" and expecially some what's been shooting Black Powder or Subs.

Some nabob has come up with a "Wrap" to go 'round the barrel to protect the delicate hands of Henry shooters from Hot Barrel Syndrome.  Pictures of the Sample Example were included.  Not to be really snarky, it is a Gim Dandy ider.  Sample example had a hole cut to go around the rear sight (keeps the wrap in place) and also indicated one would need a "stick" to stop the follower whilst still shoving the cartridges into the Carrier Block.  Think I'm gonna make one.  Or several.

I'm somewhat titillated to go take a gander .... but then naught , I don't wanna go on the other wire
Send me your completed photo and I'll post it for ya..... :)

I attribute the spacer stick Idea to Driftwood Johnson, may not been his patent but he was the one that showed it to me...
I don't use one anymore and a plain black driving glove serves me .

Ah well ... not quite.  I came up with the Idea for the spacer stick several Lustrum ago.  Was communing with Driftwood at the time so I sent him one of my prototypes.  He liked it but made his own owt of a different material.  Later development resulted in Stick, Mark 1, A1 which is just super trix.

If you want, I can send you some glossy(s) of Stick, Mark 1, A1 to post here for me so other Henry Shooters can take a peak.

Years ago, maybe late 90s, someone fabricated  and was selling a leather covered gizmo for the 1860 Henry that was spring steel with leather stitched on both sides, about 5 inches long, shaped like a figure 8, with the top of the 8 open.  It clamped/slid on the barrel and mag tube, and the follower went through the bottom hole of the 8.

I really wish I had ordered one, as it looked pretty neat.  I also saw a Henry that had wood panels about 6" long on each side of the barrel/mag tube.  It was held on boy screws that were threaded into the area between barrel and mag tube.

that sounds a little like the optional forend that Taylors sold for the transitional Henry a while back.  Personally, I thought that forend was butt-ugly.

EWELL EXCUSE ME    ::)  I just happen to have Three of those Transitional Henry rifles in various barrel lengths and also have those (ahem) Butt Ugly Fore Ends.  Nicely checkered I might add.  And I use em on my Transitional Henry rifles and think they look just FINE ..... THANKYOU VERY MUCH   ;D   So There  Thibbit. Thibbit.

I am just thinking about just how much barrel I can cover with one of these new fangled Barrel Wraps.  Make a short Henry look sorta like a Mannlicher I bet.  Lawsey Me but kan't thinking's get youz in some trouble   :o

Originally, one of my prime reasons for thinking up the "Stick" was to prevent magazine detonations if one were to lose control of the follower.  Actually witnessed one of those detonations that was pure frightening.  Following the incident I also got tagged to try and fix the magazine which I was able to do.  Took some serious body work.

It became even more important when I started shooting Cowboy 45 Special in my Henrys.  A 10 round stack leaves a really long drop for the follower.  Really long.  Scary long.  Glad to see MT has an appropriately long spacer for his 5 round stack.

A by product is being able to grasp the barrel further out for better balance and control.  Not that I would be one to consider that (snicker snicker)

I also found some scrap leather inna shop today I didn't know I had.  So, of course, I removed my "optional" wood fore end from my 16 inch Trapper and made a newly approved Barrel Wrap.  Pretty cool.

      Greetings, Mr. C!

Yes, this Stick keeps the follower handily 'un-handy', until one cares to reload.
Since, for now, most of my shooting is load development & PRACTICE, the 5-shot
capacity reduces the weight, as well.
Oh, S&S has Uberti Henry Buttplates. With the Cleaning Rod Trapdoor. I ordered
one. I'll keep everyone posted...!

LOL.  I saw this thread and had to reply.  I stepped out on the porch day before yesterday with the Henry and the thermometer said 108 and the usual 16% humidity.  Needless to say, I didn't shoot the gun very long.

But it's a dry heat!  ::)  (Cartoon shows the skeleton of a cowboy, wearing a sombrero, with a guitar, leaning back against a cactus. On the next cactus over is the SKELETON of a buzzard, looking down at the cowboy. Caption: But it's a dry heat!  ;D )

Except .....  :(   My prototype Barrel Wrap is way too BRIGHT!!  I'm gonna stain it a darker color.  That light colour sticks out like a sore thumb.  Bright gotta go.

Thanks MT.  So Far it's being a really fun project.

Blair

CM,
My suggestion, not that it is worth much, is to leave it alone for now.
Sun light, oils from your hands along with sweat will help to darken the leather. A good neatsfoot oil will also help darken the natural leather.
I have made leather slings for Rifle Muskets that were as pink as a babies backside when new... but are just about black now from use. It doesn't take long, and it looks better than with stain.
My best,
Blair
