Marshal Halloway

I expect all our members to follow the Golden Rule.

Quote:
The golden rule is best interpreted as saying: "Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated in the same exact situation." To apply it, you'd imagine yourself in the exact place of the other person on the receiving end of the action. If you act in a given way toward another, and yet are unwilling to be treated that way in the same circumstances, then you violate the rule.

To apply the golden rule adequately, we need knowledge and imagination. We need to know what effect our actions have on the lives of others. And we need to be able to imagine ourselves, vividly and accurately, in the other person's place on the receiving end of the action. With knowledge, imagination, and the golden rule, we can progress far in our moral thinking.

Thanks for posting that, Marshal.

It is something that we all  need to be reminded of, once in awhile. Myself included.

Marshall Holloway: First let me join those who approve of and praise your new Law and Order system. These rules are equitable and well thought out, and should serve the Community well.
I also like the philosophy of the Golden Rule, and attempt to live by it, alas, albeit imperfectly. In my sojourn down life's business highway, I found another utilitarian rule called "The Platinum Rule". At first, it may sound somewhat manipulative, but that is NOT the intent at all. The objective is to be sensitive enough about others, that your interactions with them will be satisfying and optimal..  The Platinum Rule, in effect says, "Do unto others, as (you sense) they would LIKE TO BE done unto".   It requires thought and effort to develop the sensitivity and observational skills to do this, but it is worth the effort.
You have my profound appreciation and gratitude for creating and nourishing this community.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GREAT SUCCESS FOR 2006.

There are many ways to get people on the net annoyed at you, even if you are usually a polite person.

The worst problem is something called "keyboard bravery". When you are sitting comfortably in front of your computer, safe from the world, it is often tempting to write a message that is so harshly phrased that it is insulting. Everybody has, at times, felt like writing a scathing message.

The usual explanation for this behavior is, "I'm just telling people what I think!" or "I'm only being honest!" Well, that may be true, but if you are not careful, you can offend somebody, and that can start an argument that benefits nobody.

If you frequently get into nasty debates, you should visit a search engine and look for the word "Netiquette". Much has been written about the importance of behaving diplomatically while online.

You should always read what you have written before you send your message. Not only will this help you spot errors in spelling, phrasing and grammar, but you may also notice that you don't sound as friendly as you would like.
