I found this reference to the war with the Apaches in 1868 while researching a Medal of Honor winner's grave I found in the cemetery at White Oaks, New Mexico, one of Billy the Kid's favorite hangouts. Stirring times, eh boys? Scroll up to Page 141 for the whole story.

Here is the gravestone. Note that "cavalry" is misspelled "calvary."

There's no excuse for that.  I simply don't understand how people can make that kind of careless mistake.  It's a dishonor to the hero who lies there.  I sit here shaking my head...

Griff, seen in another small cemetery here in south-central New Mexico, "Rest in peas." Not kidding.

Pitspitr

I found my G-G-Grandfather's grave in southern Wisconsin a couple of years ago. His Surname was misspelled. Deavenport instead of Davenport
