Cattleman II : Karma's a Bitch

After shaming a couple pards on another location, for whining about the new hammer on the Cattleman II, it having 3 clicks as opposed to the 4 clicks on the original Cattleman , I have to admit that I do not care for the new system. I miss the trigger and and the 4th click.
While it is cool to be able to safely carry all 6 cartridges, I'm asking myself why Taylor's and Uberti had to fix something that was not broken.
Karma got me.    :'(

Actually guys ...... Twern't Taylors idear.  Twern't Cimarron's Idear either.  Twer Uberti.  I am convinced there was some coercion by the legal staff at Uberti.  They still, for some unknown reason elected to fix something that wasn't broken.  The two position cylinder base pin worked just fine to pass the BATFE stupid "drop it from a step ladder" test for import.  Once imported, who cared??  Prior to that, Uberti had that sliding hammer block thing, tied to the pin in the safety cock notch.  That worked too.  Wasn't to objectionable.

Thing I liked about the two piece base pin??  Two minutes with a hacksaw and a drill motor to dress it and presto, worked and looked "right."  This retracting firing pin is STUPID.  I am not opinionated either!! (yes I am)

It was Uberti's idea all right.   But those previous safeties only worked if you used them.  Who carries the revolver with the basepin in the 'safe' position?  Who carries in the safety notch for the hammer-block-safety guns?  Yes, people (idiots) have had the firing pin resting on a live round and dropped the gun and shot themselves or others, with Ubertis.  Yes, there have been lawsuits.  Uberti pays some liability insurance on the guns imported into this country.  I was told that they would no longer pay that on guns that did not have the new lawyer hammer.

I haven't gotten into it to do an action job yet, but I'm sure I'll find a way around "their improvements".

If you're happy with the function of the revolver, just grind a ledge to get your first click. Not sure why they don't do that anyway to satisfy those that need the 4 clicks. If the trigger must be pulled to fire, no safety delete  has occurred.

I bought a Uberti Flat Top a few months ago and it came with the dreaded retracting firing pin. I found a replacement target trigger on clearance from Midway, but replacement hammers were/are on galactic wide backorder.

I disassembled the revolver to install a bolt spring and work on the trigger pull a bit and compared the lawyer trigger to the original. By golly, I almost think the lawyer trigger, with some judicial filing and/or grinding to remove that Rube Goldberg appendage, could be made to work with an original hammer.

I found a dude on the wire selling two Uberti hammers, both with the pivoting hammer block, and I snatched them up unhesitantly. So by weeks end I ought to have my Flat Top back the way it should be and I'll be living on the edge, taking fate into my own hands by loading 6 and using the safety notch!!

I mean, there's a positive to this new safety - it cut my gun buying habit down by a lot. My wife is pretty happy about it.

I just really wish they had left the 'Old Model' revolvers alone, give people an option. I'll need to grab my .44-40 1875 Outlaw (not calling it a repro Remington out of respect for Coffinmaker's dislike of the term) before they start messing with that hammer as well.

I must say the retracting firing pin (RFP) is something of a boon for Uberti. Now for every revolver they sell with a RFP, they're very likely to sell a trigger and hammer so it can be converted back!

I wonder if the 7th Cav revolvers from Cimarron still have the old style hammers. Christmas is coming!

I emailed someone from Cimarron back in April or May (I can't recall who answered me I'm afraid). I was told that every Uberti SAA repro/clone/what-have-you was going to have the new hammer, including the Old Model frame guns. Unfortunately, I'm assuming the 7th Cavalry revolver, the Scout revolver, and the U.S.V Artillery revolver will be included.

If anyone knows any differently, please correct me. I'd like to be wrong about this.

Just a month or so ago I was told that the old model frames still have the standard hammer.  But that it was only a matter of time before that would change as well.  When these guns first came out nobody at the importers knew what the heck was going to happen, and plans seem to keep changing.   I'd kind of like to pick up a charcoal blue 7th Cavalry as well.

There have been some posts on the SASS Wire about modifications to the existing RFP hammers to defeat the "safety" aspect.  That would certainly be more cost effective than new hammer and trigger.

This is pretty close to what you want, I think.

Thanks, Cholla.  That is a nice looking gun.  Based on the serial number (and box) that gun is quite old, maybe 20 years or so, although it looks in great shape.  But at that age, the hammer will be the "hammer-block-safety" hammer, not the standard Colt style of the more recent Cimarrons.  I do have one gun, a Thunderer, with that hammer and it works fine but I would prefer the standard hammer.

Also, while I haven't done any gigs for Cimarron in over a year, if they still give me employee discount then I can get a new one for less than that gunbroker deal  ;)

Ditto on the Remington, I need to do the same thing. It did halt my buying habit for the future but actually promoted me to buy more along with many extra parts for the OM to keep mine running for as long as I need hopefully.

I guess since I did the action job on it, I have got to where I like it better now. Slicked it up real good, but I have to admit it not quite as slick as some of my other guns. Only miss the fourth click when I am thinking about it.  I do enjoy 6 rounds.
