Friend and I bough a collection of firearms.  The coolest is the spencer.  We have a 40170 serial, 22 inch barrel but it has 6 grooves, no stabler cutoff, and no cartouche.  The barrel and receiver match numerically. P and an R on the barrel near serial.  Can anyone give us a little info on the firearm without purchasing an expensive book.  thanks.

Sounds like you have an 1860 Spencer. Pictures would help.

Potsy,

Are you joining my Spencer Shooting Society (SSS) ??? ???

Hopefully you read my disclaimer on SSS . . . if you haven't read it, you really should ;D

I checked on your Spencer Carbine, serial # 40170.  The closest serial # to your 40170 that I found in my SRS Research books is # 40204, a Spencer Carbine issued to Company I,3rd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry in June of 1865.

Hope this helps.
