This seems abundantly obvious and may have been mentioned before.

I finally got a chance last night to watch Cecil B. DeMille's "North West Mounted Police" with Gary Cooper (it's a little hard to track down).  I was surprised to see that the Mounties were armed with 1876 carbines.  It seems to be one of the rare cases where Hollywood got it at least somewhat correct.  I couldn't find very many good stills from the movie, but I'm attaching one.  I'm not sure about the ammo in the bandoleer...

This is a hard movie to find, but it is a great one to watch.  There are many original Winchester model 1876 carbines in this movie.  However, the actor in your photo (Lynne Overman) is actually holding AND shooting an original 1st model 1886 Winchester carbine.  These early '86 carbines also had the long forend.  He carries it throughout the movie and can be seen shootong at a wooden sign, hanging from a building.

Thanks, Buck! I hadn't noticed that difference. I guess it makes sense since that character is some type of scout rather than an actual mountie. I wanted to get a still image of the mounties with their 1876 carbines across their saddle pommells, but I couldn't find one.

Buck  I couldnt pick that rifle from the still but the ammo looks wrong for a 76 - do ya reckon 45/70 or 45/90 - I almost say 45/90?
Round nose boolit .

The muzzle almost looks like a smoothbore.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

It's hard to judge the caliber of the carbine by the ammo that's in the belt.  This is a Hollywood movie and it made no difference whether or not the ammo in the belt matched the actual caliber of the firearm.  My '86 carbine is .45-70 as were the majority of these long forend carbines.

I was doin it other way round (I do a lot of stuff other way round ;D) thinkin that the ammo almost looked too long for 45/70 ??

There are a few glimpses of the '76 carbines in this clip.  The clip intersperses Gary Cooper sparking Madeleine Carroll with scenes of a patrol preparing to leave the fort.
