Why The 1860 is better than the 1858

"Knuckle Knocking!" Yep, 1858s, whether BP or cartridge Conversion, beat up the knuckle of the middle finger with the trigger guard. While Ubertis tend to be better about it than Pietta, they still do it. I was shooting both my Richards Type II .45 and my 1858 gated Conversion .45 at Railroad Flat annual match. About 100 rounds from each pistol. I never had a knuckle knock from the Colt, but sure had it bad from the Remmy. I had to pad my knuckle with two bandages it hurt so bad. I never paid too much attention at local matches (25 rounds, but the accelerated 100 rounds in 3 days was brutal. The only two shots I dropped at the match were on the last stage with the Remington because I was flinching so bad.

I have a Pietta 1851 in 44 that I am installing a Kist Konverter in. It may replace the Remmy as my second pistol.

Oh my, yes...
if one has skinny bony fingers such as myself, it is not a problem.
If on the other hand ( as in not my hand ) one has largish or pudgy digits, then the answer comes in three separate and distinct solutions:

A) tuck your pinky under the grip. If it is a large-grip Pietta, without enough room, proceed to solution 2

2) get thee to a grinder, and grind away that which hast offended thee, whether it is the long bottom of the grip, or the extra metal on the front of the grip frame. If thou hast grinder too much (as I recently did with a brass frame) then go to the other workstation and add metal to the inside, whether it's with a wire welder, tip, or brazing torch.

III) get a Colt. Interchange grips frames to your hearts desire . Use a thunderer or a Bielefeld if you want. Fabricate new and historically incorrect ones as needed. One can even put the worlds ugliest grip frame on it - the Herter's Powermag 401. Lol .... oddly, it fits. Kinda. (Ask me how I know.... )

Actually my current project for a second revolver to go with my Richards Type II is an 1851 Pietta in a Historically incorrect .44. I have a Kirst gated Konverter and ejector rod on the way! I am not sure if I am putting it on my 4.75" or 7.5 " 1851. The Remmy will be held in reserve to preserve my knuckles!

Well, just hold whatcha got for a moment there Perfesser!! There are actually four/4/IV separate and distinct solutions. Maybe five, dependent on what you use for the Solution. My personal suggestion, after having my Knuckles Bashed (Gunfighter don'tcha know) would be distinct solution number four:

IV). After having first removed the Cylinder (has a use), fire up the Plasma Cutter and reduce the thing to small pieces. Then one might repurpose the Cylinder. Pencil Holder.

Lawman:

Matters not if you put the Kirst goodies on the 4.75 or the 7.5. Once installed, your going to cut the barrel the same length as the Ejector assembly .... right??

Or.... you could cut it even shorter, and just carry a separate rod to eject (Kind of a "Coffinmaker Special")

Heeled with the 3" barrel.... the same frame' s 7' barrel is lined .357 38's RNFP w/ BP

Shot the 1858 once and realized I did Not like it very much .
Switched over to Colt and Never Regretted it !

Having just revisited this tasty thread, I thought I just might mention ... in light of your most educated observation ... I now own and shoot a paring of Capt Schaffer Replicant, with conversion to central fire suppositories.

They are hugely entertaining to play with too boot. Most excellent.

My Good Perffesseur,

The 36 Capt. Schaeffer replicant is converted to 38 (357 +/-) with the use of Stainless R&D Cylinders.

For accuracy, I haven't actually taken them to the range to shoot at the ubiquitous Pizza Box. I do know they shoot well into Minute of SASS target.

For Velocity, well, um, they go from the gun muzzle to the afore mentioned SASS target and go "KLANG." Beyond that, I have no Clue. I do not possess a Velocity Evaluator. I do however, have a Rain Gauge

I have been shooting them with plain old 38/357 pistol bullets whilst I await delivery of some soft Hollow Base Wad Cutters. Stay Tuna

Yes, the Colts are sleek looking (I do own a pair of '60's and on '51). But there is something about the web on the reloading lever that appeals to me...plus, the Remmie cylinders are easy to remove.
