Received an email from Henry Firearms on a new product recommendation. I suggested a small frame Spencer in 44-40 such as  the example at the firearms museum in Cody. Do not know the economics but would love to have one.

Got the same, I suggested a 66 Yellow boy

I didn't get it.  I would have suggested a Mare's Leg '60 Henry   ;D

100% agree

Had they asked me I would have recommended a 1860 Henry chambered for the 44 Russian cartridge. That would be close enough to the 44 Henry CF to be a delight to own and shoot. (smiley face goes here)

That's the exact same request I made!

When they are thru taking suggestions I would love to see the spreadsheet on the requests!,

When the first Spencer repo carbines came out, they were in .44 Russian.
I was shooting a lot of .44 R with BP in original S&W revolvers, so I had to have one. (serial number 10) And would not give it up.
My repro Spencer shoots very well, but is not as competitive in this sport as a Henry or 1866's.
It is in MHO that this subject belongs in the Henry Section where the .44 Russian cal. best belongs.
I would have one in a heart beat!
My best,

I believe a Spencer is easily within the capability of the Henry Firearms Company. Looking at the variety of firearms they make tells me that they are willing to look at diversification. That being said I am not holding my breath waiting for it to actually happen. I shoot Spencers  for the sheer fun of it and leave competition to others.

Major 2

a 44 Russian in the current H011R,  is a simple chambering alteration
I'd  be on board
But, I have the 44/40 and doubt I buy a 4th Henry , just for 44 Russian  :-\

But I think using H011 base and build the 66 is the best "bang" for their profit line
and I would buy one
when planets align...do the deal !

I suggested they make a side loader so it could be reloaded on the clock and taken seriously by CAS shooters, while getting approved for matches. I also suggested they make shotguns and stop conceding that business to Japan, Turkey, and Italy.

Yep, an 1860 Henry in .44 Russian is definitely on my wish list.

Hello:
Sorry to wonder out loud, but given the present prices for both repro Spencers and Henry's "Original" , an entirely new model such as a small frame Spencer could be a big issue.

I scoped the Original Henry in both "brass" and case hardened versions.  The suggested, hard to swallow, prices can be less from friendly places, but am not sure the bore is as compatible with black powder and cast bullets.  Their techy told me the grooves are .003" to .004", which is for jacketed bullets and smokeless.  Maybe they changed that in the past couple years.  If not, a $400 barrel lining job might be needed.  Just my two-cent opinion.

And, per an expert here who has handled one:  The edges of the beautiful "brass" frame have been over-polished and are more rounded.  Esthetics matter to some.

I agree that a new lining is the way to go. Bobby Hoyt has done a number for me with 100% satisfaction. If I am going to pay $2000 plus for a new rifle I would like it to be unique and otherwise not available.

Gentlemen,

Not to sound like an old fart, but wouldn't this discussion have been better served in the Henry 1860 Forum ??? ???

I see why the OP placed the thread here, although the topic appears to have widened/shifted...

I thought that there would be more sympathy for a small frame Spencer on the Spencer site!
