Last weekend Rock Island Auction sold a Colt Walker, complete with the original box
and all the accessories. Thought to be the only complete set in existence, it sold
for a cool 1.8 Million, a new record for a gun.

Howdy Beartooth,
Thanks for posting this.
Here is what a 1.8 million gun looks like

Many years ago I remember reading about an elderly lady who sold an original Walker to a Gun Shop for $750. It was sold shortly thereafter for $90,000. Talk about inflation!
You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself

I guest I need to sale both of my Walkers, I could really use the money now, and not just leave it for my kids, and grandkids.

When I was a kid (50+ years ago), I saw a Walker at a gun show that looked like it had be plowed up after being buried for 100 years.  I pointed out the "$ 1000" price tag to my dad, thinking it was a joke.  My dad told me to recount the zeros.  It was $ 10,000. :o

While on location Filming "Alamo the Price of Freedom " at the Shahan Ranch , Happy (Shahan) invited me to his home, to see his gun collection.

He had a Walker that had been with the Texas Rangers , I held so much history in my hands that day :o

Worth mentioning,  Happy showed me a Colt SAA given him by John Wayne !

Just for the sake of discussion only...
After drooling over the posted pic above and not that familiar with that type of firearm, I wonder what type of material it is resting in? It kinda-sorta looks like a cutout formed piece of wood with cloth material pressed and glued to it for a firm fit, thusly holding the gun in place. Any ideas or suggestions? Were the manufacturers making boxes for guns back then or was this an after-market thing as in presentation-made?
Also, was the use of CW images on powder flasks, as in the pic, period-correct for this particular firearm?
Just curious and hope to garner some good data from all you powder pros out there.
Best regards and good shooting!

Greetings Gabe -

A "French-Fitted Case" was usually doen with a quality hardwood exterior, and either softwood
or cardboard dividers which were covered with thick felt, suede, velvet, or velour. In the case of the
form-fitted types, a softwood ( or even papier-mache' ! ) insert was made and then cavities were
carved for the implements to fit, then covered with fabric.

here is an excellent how-to website, my preferred vehicle for dissemination of information instead of

and for those who prefer to "watch people talk and wave their hands", here is a pretty darn
good 2 part video:

part 2 clearly shows the "naked dividers"

hope this helps

One thing I note in the photo is it does not appear that the box was originally made for a Walker, but probably a 3rd model Dragoon with the round trigger guard.  The barrel looks too long at 9" instead of 7 1/2", and the square back trigger guard does not fit in the  rounded french fitted cut-outs.  Just my observation from looking at the photo.  Still, an awesome set.  I think I'd rather have the 1.8 million dollars at this point though.  ;D
