Until I tried the Hornady component brass, RP was the best for consistent accuracy. The Hornady is really good stuff, but it is a bit more expensive.

Remington was always my standby for any case forming based on the 45-70.  I once messed up and sized some WW cases into bottleneck cases: they all separated at the cannelure before they were loaded 5x.

Watch that starline, the last couple of batches I've seen, very inconsistant in rim thickness and web diameter.

As coarse as the sight picture is with my NWMP Chappy carbine I can't imagine that the brand of cut down .45-70 brass would matter at all. Bullet, powder yes, brass nah.

Hey Slamfire , what didn't you like about the Jamison brass? ,,,DT

Fellers - some musings on brass

FWIW - we have had a number of lengthways splits with RP brass in 44/40 - Uberti chambers that are pretty neat so its not an oversize chamber problem - blackpowder only reloads - dont see it with starline or Winchester W brass --

Starline has maybe 12 thou variation in rim trhickness - how do I know this - dummy !!! headspaced a .92 using a case as a gauge - seems I picked a thinner rimmed case at random - set it up with appropriate clearance but got a percentage of thicker rims that will not allow the bolt to close cleanly --- THEN --- I got the calipers out !!!!! measured  rim thickness on 200 cases, so maybe 5% of that brass is enough over spec to cause me grief.

Firiend of mine is adamant Starline holds more blackpowder than others - we argue this often - peer down into a new starline 44/40 and it APPEARS like its almost  balloon head - like the old Dominion cases  - cept its not ! he is seein things that are not there. I have compared case capacity with my scale and I bet him starline holds a little less powder IF there is a difference = the brass is a little thicker i think.

Hey DT..has to do with a small amount of head space on my chaparral  the Jamison brass I bought back when I got my 76 chappy has a rim thickness of .05 consistently..starline @ .063-.065 bolt locks up better ( both the orig. chappy. bolt and the the org. win. 76 bolt ) but 45/70 starline is even a little thicker ..it's easier to mill down than to mill " UP ". I still have about 48 pcs. of Jamison,, New never loaded ,, never know may get another 76 ( it is my favorite rifle ,y'a know ).

Greyhawk ..I'v read that argument many times and since I shoot smokeless I'm sure any of the diff. mfg's cases will hold what I will be need'n. I'v been shoot'n TB as of late and really enjoy it ( 2-3"in groups at 100yds. open sights..) also use 4198 .

Also DT..they to hard -to soft ,what about the lube?  Thank's to all.

Ok I gotcha on the rim thickness , have not shot the 40/60 yet. Been working up some ammo for my New / Old 76 Extra Heavy barrel 45/75 and am planning a trip down to the big country soon . Will get some shooting in while enjoying the S/W desert . Will try them then , and let you know  .,,,DT

I guess I was kinda peeved at the variation in rim thickness with those cases - but got caught with me pants down - didnt do my work as well as I should have - FWIW - they were 44/40 - three years old at least - sittin there unused - ran em through the sizer die down to 38/40 cuz I was in a hurry to go shoot !! - Have not measured a run of anybody elses brass to check rim thickness - these were 12 thou from fat to skinny - dunno what is specs but that seems tooo much to me.
No big deal really - just means I need to be ultra careful what I load up for that 38/40 - am not gonna pull it down and redo headspace - it shoots nice.

Hey Dusty
Enjoy the trip -- you realise I will be here drooling until you get back and post some pics of that heavy barrel 76 and tellus the best load you found ...... proly will be other fellers drooling too.

When I was a youngster in school we watched a movie (I thought it was called the last hunt?) two guys go in the store and they buy a sharps and a heavy barrel '76 to go hunt the last of the buffalo ......on it goes .. theres a scene where they are doing the actual shoot - sittin on a hill using sticks to support the guns - about every ten the repeater guy uses a "cleaning round" - (yeah its a movie !!) - extra boot and more noise - at the end you see this picture of the ground around their feet littered with those big fat brass cases and fifty odd buffalo down - it even showed them going down when they shot - at the end of the movie there was a story how the scene was an actual harvest/culling of the herd in one of the national parks where bufaffalo were being restored - I have watched the last hunt and several other movies looking for those scenes I remember - but I dont se em - was I dreaming or did I not look good enough - figured you might know.  I am talking about a movie I watched no later than 1963
cheers

Slamfire, the last batch of 40-65 scrupline brass, probably about 10 percent had to shave the case head off to get them to chamber and close the breech on the wife CSA 1885. Box of 44-40's are straight as a string, ie you actually form the case the first trip thru the size die..
Never have been a fan of the brand, and this last batch of brass, pretty much seals the deal on it being the last batch..

Starline 44-40 brass is actually straight walled and tapered so it doesn't actually look like real 44-40 brass until fire formed to the chamber.

Dang !! Ranch thanks for the "Alert" hopefully my order of 45/70 brass will be "OK" I will be cutting it down to reform to 40/60 ..don't y'a  just love it when a plan comes together . The more we expect quality seems like the less we get. I'll be sure and holler when the brass gets here and let y'a know.

side note: what OAL do you use on "your "40/65 brass ??
