I just got a double shoulder, to cut down for rifle slings. I'm on the first sling, and after washing it with saddle soap, and then wiping it down with an alcohol wipe, I'm getting funky results. The front piece is dyed with medium brown Fiebings, and the back piece is black Fiebings. The brown is really streaky and uneven, and the black is just rubbing off. This isn't even the USMC black that everybody hates either, just the regular stuff. I've laid it on several times, as heavy as I can. I have had a piece refuse the black, but usually only one spot, not the whole length. And no, it isn't Tandy leather either. How does the deglazer they sell work?

I tried to dye my Hide several times.  No luck.  Still pasty beige.   ::)

Is it veg tanned or oil tanned,,,makes a diff. You can mix up acylic acid ,,wipe on ,, let dry will deglaze ,& remove  the finish,,then it should take die ,,use a circular motion won't streak as bad.

I bet its them lily white legs that causin ya the most trouble  ;D

I myself am naturally tanned, a nice golden olive :)

The hide in question is a veg tanned piece. Acylic acid sounds familiar, does it have a common name? I was using oxalic acid, or in times of need, Barkeeper's Friend... mostly the same, just easier to find locally.

Hey Captin,,most likely the same,,white powder mix w/ water ,,will clean leather and other stuff ,,,will rust metal fast if not rinsed  really good.

Greyhawk,

You got it in ONE.  Yep.  Pasty white legs just won't respond.  Oh well.  May well have to try something temporary, like SprayTan.  NOT!!

It was probably stored under an oily hide of some kind for a while.  Veg tan will soak up the oils from the surface of other stuff.
Never smile too big, the gods may mistake it for hubris.
