Anyone use hard chrome on their guns instead of nickel?

Virginia Gentleman, a good alternative to hard chorme may be Robars NP3 treatment. I had a Sig P-226 done with it. It's gauranteed for life and since it's teflon based it even needs less lubrication.

Robar is in AZ, and you can Google the name to get their site. Mine looked like brushed niclkle when I got it back, but it never peeled, blemished, or any other bad stuff like hard chrome or nickle does.

I am familiar with NP3 from Robar and the one thing I don't like about it is it looks either too gray or even yellow.  BTW, hard  chrome does not peel. flake or chip as it is applied directly to the steel.  Regular old nickel will flake, chip and peel after some use.

Big John, you're wasting your breath.  It's been quite clear from the start that he's only interested in talking about 'hard chrome' from 'Fords Custom Gun Refinishing'.

The fact is that there's indeed plenty of good finish choices other than this mythical 'hard chrome', including the one you speak of.

Not true.  Everything peels, flakes or chips (or just wears off) eventually.

I have a Colt Sesqui-centennial (125 year) that had a silver plated cylinder etc and just had to shoot it once.  Well the silver plate blew off a lot of places on the cylinder so I had the thing hard chromed (don't remember where) and it's been a shooter ever since.  Hard chromed the frame of a 1911 and it's great.

True, as industrial hard chrome is used in high friction areas of machinery and in the aircraft industry.  On a 1911 it is great because it offers durability and excellent corrosion resistance.  I kind of like the color too as it can be a nice gray/blue shade when put on a bead blast finish, look like stainless when on a brush finish and resemble nickel when high polished.  Glad to hear it worked out well on your gun.

Well a 1911 ain't cowboy unless you count Gary Cooper in "they came to Codura".  Anyway the slide is blue the frame is hard chrome and it works just fine thank you :) oh it looks good too
