Civilize them with a Krag . . .

When George Patton came up with an experimental uniform for the Tank Corps, it featured a leather football helmet.  If I remember correctly, he got it from the Green Bay Packers.  I need to look that up again.

I just looked up the picture, which just goes to show why I no longer rely on things I THINK I remember from when I was a kid.  It looks like an early plastic helmet to me.  Still from the right era, though!

A bit off topic.... When I was a freshman Center in 1954 I wore a Leather helmet. Sophmores and up got plastic helmets. Our coach said we had any guts, we wouldn't wear a helmet. Please excuse the picture. It's sixty four years old.

If they really want football players to stop leading with their helmets, they should just take the face masks off.  Your coach may have had something there!

In the 50's the helmets didn't have face masks.  At least by the time I started in 57 we had plastic helmets.  Johnny no wonder people say you are hard headed ;D

You know Johnny, that story explains a lot!  ;D

When my Dad started playing he had no face mask, but before he graduated, he had gotten a single bar like what the kickers and quarterbacks wore in the NFL during the '60's. When I was playing I wore a full face steel cage and with the way I bent it up I can't imagine playing without a face mask. When my son played he wore the concussion preventing protocol helmet; which by the way, didn't prevent him from getting concussions. By the time my grandson is old enough to play, they will have probably mandated total envelopment in bubble wrap, and outlawed blocking and tackling all together. :P

I played without a mask as a Freshman. When I was a sophomore they gave me a Plastic Helmet. My Coach asked me if I wanted a face mask. I told him I didn't need one. At our first scrimmage I received a bloody nose. I played with a face mask after that.

My grandson, " Gabby Hayes " who some of you know, plays on his 6th grade team. They have the latest helmets made. They evan have air chambers the coach can adjust the fit. Evan with all that, he got a concussion in a game last Saturday. He'll be out until the headaches go away. Didn't ask the doc about shooting!
