I have aquestion for the most intelligent and well-informed group in the known universe! did the hats of the 1870s have liners and sweat bands? I'm wondering if I can take a too small hat, remove the sweat band, and stretch it out. I have along narrow head and if I get one big enough to fit, it costs an arma and a leg and I tend to disappear under it!
All growed up and still playin' Cowboy!

Even if they had those items originally, I doubt you'd find anyone who would declare that the owners kept them original for very long.  I wear a size 8 and all but one my hats, an Irish Eight Piece "newsboy's cap", has lost the inner sweat band and nearly none have the original hat band.

Delmonico

Yep they did.

Got a question, why would you not think they had them.

Do yourself a favor and take a dress makers (fabric) tape and measure around your head where the hat rides and report back to me, you might be surprised what I can tell you to do to make it fit right. ;)

(Trust me, I used to be a professional and haven't stayed at a Holiday Inn in almost 25 years.)

Del, I was asking because I have heard stories of the cowboys buying a new hat and soaking it in the horse trough rhen wearing it until dry to make it fit. I didn't know if there was any truth to this or if it was just a story. If true, I imagine it must have been a shock to the horse the first time he tried to get a drink and found a mass of felt in the way!

I can imagine that dunking their hat had many purposes. To wash the sweat out of it, to keep their head cool in the Sun, and to clean and reshape it after being abused on the trail.

So, yes, they could have soaked the hat to loosen the felt to fit their head.

Very important to know that measurement as well as the hat size so i know what we are dealing with.  As well and more info on the hat in question.
