Here's a link all will enjoy:  http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ - just punch in the subject - when the hits come up go for the WPA histories - these are interviews back in the 20's of people that were actually there - friends of Billy the Kid, hangings, gun fights, etc. - really interesting reading!!!

The Works Progress Administration did a lot of interesting things during the Depression as a government-sponsered way to gainfully employ folks.

The 'Writer's Project'  sent writers out to record various facets of American Life as well as to provide capsule histories of different States and communities.

The 'Artist's Project' employed artists whose murals still can be found in Municipal buildings, Libraries and Schools.

Often - these monographs and such can be found at Library sales and such - and many of the topics are well-worth the purchase.

A Library designated as a 'Repository' should have 'all' of these works available - as should any decent University that's ever drawn a Federal dollar.

Good post - Thanks.
