Is Hodgdon RS good for pistols? I came into a pound of it recently along with some other components and I want to know if it will be be of any use to me for pistols. Im sure it would be fine for shotgun loads, but could be be effectively used for pistol cartridges or in percussion revolvers? I use 2F and 3F black powder for my loads now, but if this RS is usable I want to use it.

'Hogdon RS' is primarily a rifle and shotgun propellant comparable to FF.

Whether it's suitable for revolvers isn't indicated in Hogdon's loading manual.

If you want something for cartridge revolver - try 'Trail Boss' - it loads and behaves like BP and cleans easily.

I'll just use the RS for my shotgun loads then, and I'll stick with BP for everything else.

Thanks

Is Trail Boss BP or a BP Sub?  If not, it's mention here is inappropriate.

Pyrodex is a little harder to light in the percussion revolvers so I would only use it for plinking or pistol cartridges. It is more corrosive than BP and will need same day cleanup. I only use Pyro in the shotgun.

Say no more hellgate, I'll pass it off on someone else. I am very meticulous when cleaning my guns but I prefer less corrosive when possible.

I am doubtful that Trail Boss loads like black powder.

IIRC Trail Boss is a very bulky smokeless powder that prevents double charging. From the Hodgen website under smokeless powders:

TRAIL BOSS
Trail Boss was designed specifically for low-velocity lead bullets suitable for Cowboy Action shooting.

It is primarily a pistol powder but has some application in rifles.

Trail Boss is based on new technology that allows very-high loading density, good flow through powder measures, stability in severe temperature variation, and, most importantly, additional safety to the handloader.

After reading the post by Prof. Marvel on substitute propellants I would rather shoot battery acid through my guns than any of the subs except APP. Fortunately here in Texas there is no problem getting real Gun Powder so I am not restricted about what I can keep on my property. The friendly folks in the big brown truck brings it right to my door. I do live in a rural area so there are no city regs to bother about (presuming I would bother).
That is my opinion for what it is worth.

It was stated in one post that Train Boss can be loaded like Black Powder
NO NO NO!!!
Trail Boss is a NITRO POWDER!!!
Load it like real Gun Powder (aka Holy Black) and most likely you will disassemble your gun at arms length.
Get a loading manual and see How much to use in what caliber and what bullet.
AGAIN TB IS NOT THE EQUIVALENT OF REAL HOLY BLACK AKA GUN POWDER IT IS NITRO POWDER

Be warned always use a loading manual always repeat ALWAYS USE A LOADING MANUAL
Got it?

It is also a very high pressure powder for the velocity you get from it.

   Greetings!

With reference to the original post: YES, you can use Pyrodex RS in your percussion
revolver; as a previous poster indicated, you can think of the Black Powder relationship
to Pyrodex RS and Pyrodex P as being like GOEX FFg and FFFg, respectively.
I've never had ignition issues with Pyrodex in my Percussion Revolvers; I did experience
"some" occasional ignition issues in a Percussion Sharp's Carbine, which has a rather
circuitous flash channel, but it wasn't a big deal. I've also used Pyrodex RS in my Pedersoli
12ga Muzzle-Loading Double Shotgun without issues.
   I've also used Pyrodex P and RS in handgun and rifle cartridges, and they performed fine;
I used Black Powder - style bullet lube, and washed my brass, the same as if I had loaded
my shells with Black Powder.
I hope that you kept the can of Pyrodex RS and tried it; it would've likely met with your
satisfaction.

The question is "is Hodgdon good for pistols?" is answered in the article my Professor Marvel in the Powder Room topic first article about "regarding cleaning after Pyrodex and 777."
The answer seems to be that it can be used in a pistol, but it is not good for the pistol. Big difference to say the least.
APP as an all together different propellant. I have used it some, it works, makes BOOM, makes smoke, and is easy to clean. If i could not get real Gun Powder I would use APP, but since where I live the Big Brown truck brings it directly from Arkansas to my front door that is the propellant of my choice.
But to answer the question in my opinion is...Can it be used in a pistol? Yes
Is it good for the pistol.? It would appear not.
