Went to the gun show looking for a m1 carbine stock mag pouch and a bolt for my uberti horseman, and I walked out with a can of black powder. Its 3f elephant powder... I never heard of it before. have any of you guys?

Elephant was a Brazilian made powder, hasn't been made for 10-15 years. The early stuff was decent, the last of the production wasn't.
It could make some accurate loads but it fouled pretty heavy.

I shot a couple cases of Elephant.  Sadly, I failed to keep a single empty can for my collection  :-[

But I do still have my Elephant Powder ballcap  :)

Abilene, took a look in my shop for an empty can for you.  :o
But somebody did a really good job of cleaning it out.  Guess they got recycled. :-\
That is the end of my collection  :'(
Guess I better be careful, next time I say, get rid of all the junk!  :-X

I used several cans at one time, everyone told me how bad it was, how it would foul, etc, but my 1860 Armys didn't care, mad a satisfying "Boom-clang" at the cowboy range.

I still have a couple of full cans of Elephant. ;D

hey, thanks!  But you may find that if you shoot much at all it will go a lot faster than a can of smokeless  :)

Personally used a LOT of Elephant powder..& at under $5 per pound (I still have the invoices to prove it)...why not use it?
Well, I've been out of the stuff for almost 5 years now.baaaaa!
My stash was gone about 10 years ago...but My dad did have some he wasn't going to use & he gave to me.

Secret was to "sock" the powder to remove the excessive graphite dust. I used it in everything up to buffler guns & did fairly well with it.

I make a point to save at least one of every type/brand of powder I've used. Takes a lot of space, but satisfying to see how many can changes have taken place over the years. New plastic containers...no, nothing elegant about them, they belong in the trash  ;D

I've burned up a few lbs. of Diamondback powder and for some reason the other day I was reading the back of the can.(ya, life is exciting here in Nebraska during January) Says the powder is imported by the Diamondback Chemical Co., manufactured by the Elephant Industia Quimico     Barreiros, Pernambuco, Brazil.  I thought it was fairly clean burning until I was introduced to Olde Eynsford!

Congratulations
You are about to join the League of Real Gun Powder shooters.
I might be giving my age away but my first can was one of Do Pont Orange Extra Sporting Powder and how I wish I still had it.
May your smoke always be white and plentiful.

I still have a half a case left. When it's gone I start all over with a new brand for my Sharps. Loved the stuff, my rifle does well with it.

I don't have the money to buy black powder online and pay the hazmat fee, so i was lucky to find this one when the gun show rules specifically say no black powder. i sure wished that my local gun store sold it like they do smokeless.

My last can of it .... all of 17-18 years old

My first can of black powder I bought (along with my first cap n' ball) back in March of '72 was FFF and was of the 'Metor' brand, made in Scotland I have always been told. Believe the cost was around $2.25 or so. Though that was pricey, was buying Alcan AL-5 and AL-7 shotgun powder using a Lee handloader about the same time for around $1.67 a can (looked on old empty can I still have). Bought some caps also in a red plastic round 'tin' that set me back around .63 or so a hundred. Cheap shootin back then. Still have several empty old orange Metor powder cans and red plastic tins around, why, don't ask me.

I just tried it in my Uberti rem 58 cap&ball, so far not bad.
