Hi

This isn't something I'm in a huge hurry to do, but I'd like to make a cartridge belt for my 45-70 1886 lever gun.  Are the cartridge loops straight or tapered to match the 45-70 cartridge?  I'd guess I use fairly thin (3-5 ounce) leather.  If these are tapered, a really detailed explanation of how that works would be great (and probably beyond my capabilities).

After I posted naturally.  Straight, and I'll buy a 1.5 inch punch to weave the loops in.  This isn't a competition rig, but a combination .45-70 / .45ACP one.  Don't wait up waiting for me to finish...

;D

Thanks and Merry Xmas

Glad you got it figured out. Post a pic when it's finished, no matter how long it could be.

Attached are pictures of a Cartridge belt I made several years ago to hold .45-70 Cartridges. The loops are made from 1-5/16" wide webbing very similar to what is used on Army belts. The loops are straight, not tapered. I use this belt in GAF matches.

That's a beautiful belt, Johnny. I like the use of the webbing for the loops.

Thanks Marshall. One advantage of the webbing loops is that they do not turn the brass green.

It seems to have turned the tips of some of your bullets copper-colored though...  Unless those are... No.  It couldn't be. ;D

Nice looking belt!

Nice belt Johnny! are those a full woven loop? in and out of the same slot? How do they hold their shape with the webbing when you have some empty loops? I like the idea of the webbing and it looks like a neat contrast with the leather belt.

Howdy Griff,
You have a good eye. The Copper colored bullets have a Polymer coating which is supposed to reduce leading.

Howdy Cliff,
These are fully woven loops in and out of the same slot. The webbing is stiff enough to hold its shape when empty.

Did you wet the webbing to get it to hold its shape?

I pull the webbing through the slot "dry" over an empty case. After I have the proper tension, I apply some Barge to lock the loop in place. I do this with leather and webbing loops. It helps to retain the proper fit or tension for the Cartridge.

Nice design!  I may replace my leather loops on  my "loop-thru-belt" 45-70 with webbing.

Thanks for the diagram. That looks like a good way to put them together. For shotgun shells, I can see why you do them in pairs.
