I bought a pair of WPG US Model 1908 Cavalry Breeches. They arrived today and I tried them on. They are longer waisted than I thought they would be. Are these worn above the navel? Does any of you have any experience with these? Do they shrink when washed? I am trying to determine if I need to get a smaller size.

I've got a pair.  They run about about a size larger than the 1936 Cavalry breeches.  Mine did not shrink much.  Overall I'm very satisfied with them.

trousers typically were worn up about the navel until after WW2. This trend where we allow out beer guts to hang over the waistband is actually rather recent.

Thanks. I'll try them on again tonight to determined if I keep them or return for a smaller size.

...or return for a smaller size.
That'd be a nice problem to have. My uniforms keep shrinking in the closet.  ::)

Though they sported an 'Ivy League belt' for adjustment, these were commonly worn with suspenders, and when you remember that the enlisted soldier of the era wore and undershirt, a wool pull-over shirt and a tie - extra room was a blessing.

The uniforms of that time frame weren't form-fitting by a long shot, and the EM weren't allowed to tailor - though they could employ the use of darts - because that would be materially altering the issue item.

I'd say second helpings at all meals is called for, Slim. That should solve the problem.
