Professor Marvel

Greetings my dear Slamfire -

As a well-known cheapskate frugal fellow I like to use whatever I can sneek into the grocery-store shopping cart and so have had extra-ordinarily good luck on "normal" icky bores using a layer of copper choreboy on a worn brash brush ( one that anyone else would have already discarded!).

If that doesn't cut it, I used choreboy with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and household ( 3% ) peroxide ( make only as much as you need and don't try to save it, not worth it ).

On the one occasion that didn't cut it, I ended up using multiple applications of a foaming lead-and-copper removing product ( ach, the scotman in me cried out in pain!) followed by copper choreboy wrapped around a worn bore brush.

And St. George's recommendations are always good :-)

Go to the "Gunsmithing" section, check out a post titled "JB Bore Paste Cleaning Woe's". Discussion on cleaning bores there. I like JB, have used it for 20 years+-!

Montana Extreme Cowboy cleaner will get most of it out, follow the instructions on the can.
After that run some flannel patches soaked in pure gum spirits of turpentine, a couple of dry patches and repeat until the patches come out fairly clean looking.
Then swab the bore with the Montana Extreme Accuracy oil, and let it set, after a day or so, fire a few rounds and clean again.
Those old bores hold a ton of carbon and lead fouling, and don't be surprised to be able to see pitting in there, as it's a pretty good bet those old corrosive primers used when that gun was young has had a long time to work on that barrel steel. But it should still shoot well.

For carbon fouling I have had good success with M-Pro 7, for lead I use Montana Extreme Cowboy Blend.  Both work very well for me.

Professor Marvel

I shall have to shop for that "Montana Extreme Cowboy Blend" .
Dare I say,  I don't suppose it is in the grocery stores or wally world?

The Cowboy blend should be available at any place that stocks the Montana Extreme product line. If you don't have it locally look to Grafs or Midway.

You'll like that stuff. I want to get a hold of the rimfire cleaner and see how it does, we shoot so much 22bpcr these days, that running 500 rounds thru a gun takes just a short time...
I like those aluminum bottles , they don't break if you drop them, and if you buy a small bottle and the quart bottle, you can carry the small bottle in your shooting kit, and keep the biggen at home for work there and resupply of the little one.

Use Ed's Red and chore boy copper pot mesh on an old brush....cheap, safe on the bore and easy to remove lead.
