Any recommendations  on  cap and ball pistols with the cartridge conversion. I'm looking at a 1858 with either the Kirst  or the R&d conversion. I'm kind of leaning towards the kirst conversion. my time frame is Indian War  with a trapdoor carbine .

River City John

The R&D is more period correct, but both work well.

Grapeshot

Stick with the R&D.  Had one and it was fantastic.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Niederlander

I had an R & D that worked great.  A friend has a Kirst that works great.  I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Major 2

I have one of each though mine are on Colts, But I'll echo what the Others state.

The gated Kirst does make the 51 Navy sweet to load , and the engraved R&D ( not sure if that is still a option ) is right at home on my Second Gen 1860.
BTW, I've had the 1860 38 years,  the R&D has been it 11 of those years.
when planets align...do the deal !

Pitspitr

I have the Kirst on a Remington and I like it a lot. It was my first CAS pistol and my most accurate. It isn't as historically correct as the R&D but that is the only thing I can fault it on.

winches,
if you're going to the Muster and still undecided, I have a box of hollow-base cartridges loaded up that I'll bring with my Remington and R&D cylinder to try out.
