I have been doing some research on various well known individuals as well as some somewhat obscure persons in the "Old West" the time frame would have extended into the late 1890's.  Some of the individuals that have been rather intriguing to research.  I need some additional sources to search.  Any information is appreciated.  The individual in particular would have been in various locations during the 1880s to start, and I am not sure as to what date to use for a cutoff.  The individual's name given in many accounts was "Slanting Annie".   Thanks

From a google search -

I found a reference to her as a "lady that served the miners' passions" in Creede, CO.

There seems to be a ale named Slanting Annie's Chocolate Porter -

You might contact the Creede Historical Society - see http://www.museumtrail.org/creedehistoricmuseum.asp

Thanks, Chantilly.
I ran across her mentioned in one of my reference books as one of the little sung heroines of the gold camps.  It seemed she nursed sick miners that were ill with cholera in one camp, and smallpox in another, at considerable risk to heself.  Creede may have some usable information.

Lone Gunman

I have it on good authority that Slanting Annie had a sister named Eileen.

She and I aren't related. :D

However, she had a cousin called Askew, or so I hear.

French Jack - definitely research claims of "nursing illness" further.  Although many ladies of passion in western camps did attend to needs including some nursing, that generally was not their primary ...errhhh....goal.

Mention in song -

The Rise and Fall of Creede

A thousand burdened burros filled
   The narrow, winding, wriggling trail.
A hundred settlers came to build,
Each day, new houses in the vale.
A hundred gamblers came to feed
On these same settlers -- this was Creede.

Slanting Annie, Gambler Joe
And bad Bob Ford, Sapolio, --
Or Soapy Smith, as he was known, --
   Ran games peculiarly their own,
And everything was open wide,
And men drank absinthe on the side.

                      * * *

And now the Faro Bank is closed,
   And Mr. Faro's gone away
To seek new fields, it is supposed, --
More verdant fields.  The gamblers say
The man who worked the shell and ball
Has gone back to the Capitol.

The winter winds blow bleak and chill,
   The quaking, quivering aspen waves
About the summit of the hill --
   Above the unrecorded graves
Where halt abandoned burros feed
And coyotes call -- and  this is Creede.

Lone graves whose head-boards bear no name,
Whose silent owners lived like brutes
And died as doggedly, -- but game,
And most of them died in their boots.
We mind among the unwrit names
The man who murdered Jesse James.

We saw him murdered, saw him fall,
And saw his mad assassin gloat
Above him.  Heard his moans and all,
And saw the shot holes in his throat,
And men moved on and gave no heed
To life or death -- and this is Creede.

Slanting Annie's Chocolate Porter

Ingredientsfor 5 gallons (19l.)

1 3/4 lbs. (0.8 kg.) pale ale malted barley

2 1/4 lbs. (1 kg.) crystal/caramel malt

2 1/4 lbs. (1 kg.) wheat malt

1/3 lb. (0.15 kg.) black roasted malt

1/3 lbs. (0.15 kg.) chocolate roasted malt

3 lbs. (1.4 kg.) light dried malt extract

12 oz. (0.34 kg.) unsweetened Baker's chocolate

1 1/4 oz. (35.5 g.) Williamette hops (boiling): 7 HBU

1/2 oz. (14.2 g.) Williamette hops (flavor): 3 HBU

1/2 oz. (14.2 g.) Williamette hops (aroma) 1/4 tsp (1 g.) powdered Irish moss Ale Yeast 3/4 c. (178 ml.) corn sugar or 1 1/4 c. (296 ml.) dried malt extract (for bottling)

Using a protein developing step mash, add 1 gallon (3.8 l) of 130-degree F (54.4 C) water to the crushed malt. Stabilize at 122 degrees F (50 C) and hold for 30 minutes. Then add 2 gallons (7.6 l.) of boiling water. Stabilize at 154 to 157 degrees F (67.8 69.4 C) and hold for 60 minutes. add heat and mash out to 165 degrees F (74 C).

Sparge with about 3 to 3.5 gallons (11.4-13.3 l.) of 170-degrees F (77 C). Add more water (do not oversparge) to brewpot to make an initial extract volume of 6 gallons (22.8 l.). Anticipate evaporation of about 1 gallon (3.8 l.).

Prepare the chocolate by microwaving it in saucer. This will soften the chocolate, making it easier to dissolve in the boil. Add the softened chocolate, malt extract and boiling hops and boil for an additional 15 minutes. Total boiling time is 90 minutes. Turn off heat. Add aroma hops and let steep for 2 to 3 minutes before removing hops and chilling the hot wort. Pitch the yeast when cool.

THE RISE AND FALL OF CREEDE
A thousand burdened burros filled
   The narrow, winding, wriggling trail.
A hundred settlers came to build,
Each day, new houses in the vale.
A hundred gamblers came to feed
On these same settlers—this was Creede.
Slanting Annie, Gambler Joe,
   And Robert Ford; old Olio—
Or Soapy Smith, as he was known—
   Run games peculiarly their own,
And everything was open wide
And men drank absinthe on the side.
And now the Faro Bank is closed,
   And Mr. Faro's gone away
To seek new fields, it is supposed,
Most verdant fields. The gamblers say
The man who worked the shell and ball
Has gone back to the capitol.
The winter winds blow bleak and chill
   The quaking, quivering aspen waves
About the summit of the hill—
   Above the unrecorded graves.
Where balt, abandoned burros feed
And coyotes call—and this is Creede.
Lone graves! whose headboards bear no name
Whose silent owners lived like brutes.
And died as doggedly, but game;
And most of them died in their boots.

Above him; heard his moans and all
And saw the shot holes in his throat.
And men moved on and gave no heed
To life or death—and this is Creede.
Slanting Annie, Gambler Joe,
And Missouri Bob are sleeping there,
But Slippery, sly old Olio,
Who seems to shun the golden stair,
Has turned his time to loftier tricks—
He's doing Denver politics.

Hear the Scotts named those short skirts in her honor.

Books,

Yea, you are right. BTW, how come NCOWS don't have no "comedians class"?? Seems like there would be lotsa interest.

OK, something for the future!!!

When some of those "Originals" folks get bored, perhaps the more comical of them could aspire to a "Comedians" class.

Scores in this class could be 50% based on applause they produced around the campfire, 50% on shooting scores that day.

Lars

Dr. Bob

Lars,

DANG.  now I'm going to have to load lots of ammo to practice my shooting so it doesn't drag my score down. ::) ::) ::)

Now, off to find some high class material!  Have ya heard the one aobut........... ???

Lars

Well Dr. Bob, since it ain't an official class yet, you could petition the Senators to decrease the percentage of score for shooting. Cannot go to zero, or NCOWS might be on that long, slippery slope of becoming a non-shooting organization, like Major Lewis is worried about.

Sure hope French Jack and Slanting Annie and all her kinfolk are not too upsett about they way this thread has wandered off.
