Just out of curiosity, how would a donation of a cartridge firearm be handled as far as transfer legalities go?

It would have to be transferred through an FFL in the state in question. If it is a long gun, federal law allows for non-FFL transfer to a resident of a contiguous state of the donor. Safest if you're not in your home state is transfer through an FFL of the state you are in for the donation. Of it is an original, prior to 1899 (1898 or before manufacture) it is considered an antique and exempt from Title 18 code.
