Considering a 58 Navy, how true to the originals are they, and what's the size difference between the 39 and 44?  Have two 44's, one a Uberti and one a Pietta.

Thanks

I don't own any, but from what I know is that early productions of the guns where different. But in more recent times both companies use the 44 frame, just that the 36 is bored for the 36 caliber while the 44 is well 44.

When they made smaller framed Remington Navy - on the right. Large framed Navy on left uses .44cal. frame. Both shown are .36cal.

You can find smaller framed Navies on the secondary market.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of.  Were the originals smaller as well?

Scattered Thumbs

Uberti used to have a good replica of the Navy Remington with the smaller frame. But that went the way of the dodo bird.

In the early days of reproduction Remington's there was a difference between the Army size frame (based off of the NM 1863 revolvers) and the Navy size frames (based off of the 1861 Remington Beal type revolvers).
I do not remember when this change came about (maybe in the mid to late 1970's?) but most all of them know are based off of the NM 1863 size frame and cylinder.
Just don't put a .44 cylinder on a revolver with a .36 cal. bore.

Thanks, now just need someone, other than Palmetto, to make a whitney navy revolver instead.

As an aside to putting a 44 cylinder in a 36 gun, my first 1860 RM had a 44 cylinder with a 45 barrel, hope there wasn't one made with a 45 cylinder and a 44 barrel.

Sir Charles deMouton-Black

There were FIVE sizes of Remington Cap & Ball revolvers. They carried over to the conversion models and some double actions;

Army
Navy
Belt model
Police, and
Pocket

The Belt Model sounds neat. It still carried a .36 ball, but was somewhat smaller than the Navy Model, but still a six-shooter.

A 36 cal belt model would be great.  Wonder why there's copies of all the colts, except for maybe the side hammer roots, but really on one Remington?
