I read somewhere that many of the ivory hunters had very short hunting lives because of the horrendous recoil generated by the guns that they thought were necessary to kill an elephant.

It was more due to vicious beasts, no antibiotics or medical care as well as malaria.  ;)

The same folks that were trying to develop the Merwin Hulbert revolvers came out with a bolt action rifle they called the ".577 T- Rex".
Needless too say, that too failed with the Merwins. It was not loaded with BP!
