I just picked up what looks to be an 1860 Carbine (S/N 51062) to go with my 1860 rifle (http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,16998.0.html.

Thanks to the great information and knowledge on this forum, from what I've read, it looks like it was probably used in the CW, then parted out to a surplus house like Bannermans. It has the 22" 6-groove barrel, without the springfield mod's such as the Stabler cutoff, extractor spring, relining, etc.

What leads me to believe that it was later a surplus parts gun is that the finish on the block, sideplate, etc. don't look like they would have when originally fit based on the photos that I've seen, there are extra numbers stamped on the block parts, lever and barrel, and the patent information looks like it has been scrubbed, and not worn off. The rear sight looks like it is the later 1865 sight, but also looks like it has been on the carbine for a long time.

The bore is fair--some scattered pitting, a dinged-up crown, but fairly sharp rifling. The serial numbers match on the receiver and barrel, and there aren't any missing parts. I got it for a little less than $1200, so I'm happy with it, in any case.

I'll post some photos of it later tonight, once I get it cleaned up, a bit.

Jacob,

I checked on the serial # of your Spencer Carbine serial # 51062.  I found an EXACT MATCH for it, also, serial #51062 - a Spencer Carbine 1860 model issued to Company C, 7th Indiana Volunteer Cavalry on March 2, 1865.

Nice find.  Now need to see some clear, sharp photos of it.  In 11 years of finding Spencer serial #s, I have only discovered 7 exact matches in the SRS books.

Great news about the info. Thanks, Two Flints--that really makes my day (and weekend).

Hopefully, the photos work. I didn't see much on the wood, as far as stampings/cartouches. There does appear to be an E.A.W. stamped in the wood just ahead of the top buttplate screw, though.

Nice, informative photo's.  Thanks for sharing.
