it is a .45ACP case with a .45 Colt rim. I am told that .45ACP data will work with the .45 Cowboy Special.
The auto rim is too thick since it is thick enough to head space a rimless case.
At least that is my observation.

The 45 Cowboy Special is just a 45 Colt case that has been trimmed to the length of a 45 ACP.  Any valid loading information that applies to the 45 ACP can be used in the 45 Cowboy Special.

I was fortunate enough to obtain 500 of these cases when they were first made available several years ago.  They solved the problem of creating a lighter Cowboy in the 45 Colt.

45 Auto Rim has a rim that is too thick for any of my 45LC revolvers. When I started this game I mistakenly bought 500 of them. Oops! Had to sell them off and found Cowboy 45 and haven't looked back.

Actually, a C45S case is more of a 45 Colt case that has had the middle taken out of it.  The bullet seat area and case mouth thin down
alla a standard 45 Colt case.  When you trim a 45 Colt to ACP length, you wind up with a case mouth that is a mite thicker than "normal"

Gentlemen,

Thanks for that info! I was going to try some auto rim cases but y'all saved me some money there!

I want to play with these and Scofeld cases for black powder "play". I still love shooting the original 40 grain FFFG load for historical oriniality and am playing with 30 grain/grits load as well. 250 grn bullet.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize the discussion was about how to make the 45 Cowboy Special from 45 Colt brass.  I thought we were talking about case length for the two cases.

Sorry Lucky, but you did mention the C45S was a 45 Colt case "trimmed" to 45 ACP length and I wanted to correct that misinformation.
While 45Colt can be trimmed to C45S/45ACP length (I've done that myself) the Starline cases are drawn just like 45 Colt.
Trimming 45 Colt leaves a thick case mouth (which works none the less), while the drawn cases have the correct thinner case mouth.

There was no mis-information in my post. The 45 Cowboy Special is exactly what I described with reference to case length, which is what we were talking about.

Anybody with the ability to make the cases has sense enough to know that the case mouth has to be thinned.  I have been making 45 Cowboy Special cases for years using old 45 Colt cases with split mouths, thus extending he life of the brass.  It is not worth the effort to make a bunch of them from new 45 Colt brass.

Well heck Lucky,
At least we agree the C45S case makes a super case for reduced loads in the .45   :)

After Adirondak Jack sold the business, has anyone gotten the brass back to market?

American Cowboy Ammo owns the rights to C45S and is making ammo in that case.   I've been told they will also sale the brass.

Actually, a shooter named Miss Cubby bought the rights from Adirondack Jack and sold the brass for several years, then sold the rights to American Cowboy Ammo, as Bibbyman said.  For a while they were only selling it in loaded ammo, but they finally started selling just brass.

I use CAS brass in revolver and an 1860 Henry with  a converted lifter. My usual load is 1.2 c/c FFFg and a 210 Big Lube bullet. The crimp holds the bullet in the case, and the powder keeps the bullet from collapsing into the case.
If I don;t feel like cleaning guns and brass I use a 160 grain bullet and a .45ACP target load with Unique n the revolvers but the Henry is Gun Powder only.
In both loads the case mouth gets dirty but the lifter stays pretty clean. With Coffinmakers positive slam down modification i shot 5 stages with no feeding problem in the Henry. It is a bit of a handful in the 1873 but is period correct and way cool to do.

What is the case capacity difference between the .45 Cowboy Special and the .45 Schofield?  Can the 73s and 66s be made to work with the schofield round?
