Thinking about buying a pair of new Colts

I am thinking about buying a new pair of Colts Single Action Army revolvers and was wondering if there was anything in particular to look for?

I am prob. going with the 4 3/4 barrels in .45 with the Blue/CH finish.

I had one Colt a long time ago and it shot great and I was just kicking around the idea of getting a new pair.

Is there any dealer out there that may have the best price that I should consider?

Colt delivery is so slow and so sporatic that there really are no dealers that have them in stock.  They are all "custom" shop orders, take up to two years to get, and the price is the price.  Not that long ago (two or three years) Cabelas and other dealers had them in stock and on the shelf.  Not so anymore.  You might try looking at the auction sights and pick up a pair.  Lots and lots of new in the box Colts floating around.

Thanks for getting me up to speed. Guess I'll have to check the auction sites and see what I can find.

It is, in fact possible to "New" Colt SAs.  You just CANNOT get them from Colt.  Auction sites, Classifieds on the CAS sites, Private sellers
at gun shows.  Just ........ not from Colt.

I'll second Coffinmaker.

Colt's production is seriously low, and if you were to order a pair, it could quite easily be a couple of years before you get them.

However, there are brand-new ones available on-line on Gunbroker and Gunsamerica, and at places like 'Cabela's' and 'Scheel's and 'Gander Mountain' if you start looking for their versions of a 'Gun Library'.

The big shows have them, as well.

If you don't mind used Colts, they are out there! .45 Colt is a popular caliber so you should be able to find a pair. I was looking for a .44-40 about a year ago and it didn't take me long to find one. It was about ten years old but never fired. I paid 1150.00 so you can find them at a decent price. Happy hunting!

That's is along the lines of what I'm looking for. They don't have to be brand spanking new. A used pair will be just fine by me. I didn't know Colt was so slow on this product.

There's a 2nd gen Colt in .45 for sale on the SASS Classified for $1400.00 by a guy named Ambush ( don't know if I'm allowed to refer you to another forum or not??)

Colt tied their fading star to military contracts at the expense of everything else.

They gave up their D-Frames and the Python, and the term 'innovation' isn't even close to being in the vocabulary of the 'Good Ol' Boys' who run the show, because they're all former military senior Officers hired for their military connections and not their business acumen.

Plus, they're strangled by Union workers with ever-greater demands and less inclination to actually 'work.

They've lost a couple of the M4 Contracts to FN (so much for the 'Good Ol' Boys') because someone with a working brain in procurement decided to actually pay a lower bidder who put out an excellent product, and 'that' put some knickers in a knot - but didn't affect salaries at the top.

The fact that they 'still' can produce the SAA is simply because it's an iconic wonder that's helped to keep Colt's head above water, based simply on it's sense of history and romance tied to the Old West, and no other maker can pull that one off.

If you want 'used' SAAs - there are lots and lots of those, so that just widened the field, but the short barrel and .45 Colt caliber preference also shortened it, because that's 'the' most popular amongst buyers.

Look too, for their 'Frontier Six-Shooter' in .44-40 - they built that one like they built them 'back in the day' - blackpowder frame and all, and they're 'very' nice, but getting quite difficult to find.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone. This is exactly the type of information I was seeking to learn.
