Black powder and plastic hulls...

Bp in a plastic shell with a plastic wad works fine for me.

Dick Dastardly

Loaned a SxS 12ga to a newbie one time.  He had loaded bp under plastic wads.  Took a week of work to get the plastic shit out of the tubes.  Never had that problem with "natural" wads.  I shoot only "natural" wads from Circle Fly now.  There are a number of sources for them, including Ballistic Products.

When using compression formed hulls you may find that your over powder wad is a mite tight.  If that happens, use the next gauge smaller OP wad and a standard size fiber wad.

I like this thread.  Gives me the opportunity to go back to my solutions for BP and Plastic.  Sell the Plastic off and switch to ALL BRASS
hulls.  Right size, look the part and so long as some Ham Hock doesn't step on em, they last nearly forever.  Nanny Nanny Poo Poo  ;D

The big advantage to the plastic hulls over the brass is that I can load in advance.  I now have 3-400 King of Kaboom shells and 350 "let's not beat anybody up" loads.
No way could I afford the brass t do that.

NOZ; R-P makes some gold colored plastic hulls, "Nitro 27", I think. They look like shiny brass in your cartridge loops. And they are R-P's highest quality.

Yeah, I discovered those a couple of years ago. I found a source for once fireds and have been using them exclusively for about 18 months. They load easier than STS but appear to be made of the same material. I have been placing a black line on the base of each loaded shell after loading.  I have some with 4 marks.  I come in from the range, throw away any burned hulls, put the rest in the ready to load box.  I load only black powder.

The plastic from the wads is a mess. I just cleaned my Baikal after 30 plus rounds and I had to pull the boresnake through each tube twice. Took me 4 minutes instead of the normal 2. ;D

Well ...... Poop.  Actually, I too can load in advance.  Just not as far in advance.  As soon as my broker "OK's" the expenditure, I'll be
expanding my stock of Brass Hulls.  ::)

This last weekend I ran almost two boxes of real Gun Powder loads through my SXS shotgun. Cleanup was a snap I just dunked the muzzle end in warm moose milk and gave each side ten passes with a mop.  There was no plastic anything in the barrels.
I use "repurposed" range pick up cases trimmed to 2 ½" , loaded with 4c/c FFg, a card wad, a ½" felt wad under the same 4c/c dipper of shot.
The whole thing is covered with an over shot wad and roll crimped.
Trimming and crimping  the cases is easy to do with a case trimmer from BPI and an ancient Lyman roll crimping tool in my drill press.
I get one shot and discard them since the case mouth is permently deformed by the roll crimp.

Easy to do and it knocks the KD targets down every time with lots of fire and smoke.

I use roll crimp with natural wads for match ammo.
For practice, it's all plastic with star crimps.

The black snot is easily removed after a spray of PAM soaks in for 10 minutes.

PAM is equal parts of 91% isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and Murphy's Furniture Oil. Store it in UV free container.

Ho the fire,

Seems that some lube of some sort along with the cleaning media gets the crap to slide out.  I do something like this with my moosemilk spa and a bore brush.  After the brush, (5 or so strokes) I pull a boresnake thru and the job is done.  My bores are still sparkling ever since October.

The trick is to get some kind of lube in with the cleaning mix.  I like Moosemilk for this reason because it contains Ballistol.

Sure glad I don't use plastic.  Brass is funner!!  Less fun if some ham hock steps on em  :'(

I agree! Why would anyone want to defile the pure Holy Black by loading it into a heathen plastic shell? Go real or go home, I say.  ::)

Hi Truly Grits

It is a simple matter of economics. Plastic empties cost nothing. those brass puppies cost like their color...gold.

I tried using some old  Winchester cases, and after having a couple of them split i just went to plastic.

i have on hand a couple of hundred cases trimmed and ready to load. There is no way I could do that with brass, even though they look really neat.
However paper cases started being used in the 1870's so they should be considered period correct and I do have and use some paper Federal cases. they are trimmed and roll crimped look good and shoot like they look.

Simple as that and i loaded a coupe of boxes this afternoon some paper and some plastic and primed about 75 more for loading later

When I don't load brass hulls, I too use the gold Remmie nitro plastic hulls.  I will get 5 loadings out of each easy.  I use plastic wads even in the brass cases.  A spray of moosemilk down the bores, let the barrels sit horizontally for a few minutes while cleaning other guns, shove a half of a paper towel wadded up through each bore.  Occasionally there is a little fouling left, so repeat.  Very rarely when the humidity is really low, I might need to run a brush down the bore a couple times.  I have a boresnake but haven't used it in years.  When it is clean I spray some ballistol down each bore and shove another paper towel through to coat the bores.  Easy.

TG I feel for you.
It has been chilly here in central Texas it got down to almost freezing last week. Our shoot saturday was clear and over 70 by the time we finished.

It is wonderful to be in Texas even in the 10months summer one month of fall and one month of spring.
Or is that rubbing it in?

I hate you (kidding)! Up here in Alberta, we are sometimes referred to as Texas North; as I look out my window, at 19 miles of lake, frozen 20 inches thick....and it has been a 'warm' winter. We might have oil too, but this sure isn't Texas.  :P

Current view. It does make a great skeet range though.
Cheers!

TG
that is truly beautiful especially when viewed from a few thousand miles south.
You are one tough dude to live there.

You know Bunk, it's really all about what you are used to; I'd turn into a useless puddle in the summertime heat of Texas.  :D
Just for fun, my sons, shooting clays on Christmas Day this year. This was our 4th annual Christmas Day Shoot. A great new family tradition.

Cheers!
