While searching for something else in back copies of the BPCN, I ran across an article in the Fall 2011 issue entitles - "The Hawken-Trapdoor and The 45-70 Government" by Robert Woodfill.

This is a rifle with jaw-dropping beauty and grace, a real work of art. The front half very much looks like my H&R Officer Model, but it's pure Hawken from the trigger guard to the butt plate.

Scratch built from various parts sources, it has a 26" Green Mountain barrel with 1x18" twist. Other parts came from Track of the Wolf.

I post pics in photobucket, then copy the image link into the post. It's pretty easy once you do it a couple times. Here is a discussion about photo posting.

It's not rocket science, it just takes a little effort to figure how to do it with your computer. Each can be a little different.

I looked up pictures and it is a beauty of a rifle. I'd love to have one.

If you google "Gemmer Trapdoor Rifle", you will get several sites with images and discussion.

To my eye, the Trapdoor makes the most handsome of all the Gemmer conversions. It's a natural. I'll settle for the "If'n it ain't broke - don't fix it" version and simply have a pistol grip put on my H&R Officer Model.

The Ballard pacific #5 seems about as close as you'll find to a factory Gemmer style rifle. They are beautiful.

Of the four basic breach loading cartridge guns, Sharps, Spencer, Remington an Springfield TD type arms, the Springfield can be built up on a Gemmer style conversion that looks like the older Hawken family of arms.
This is due primarily to the fact that the Springfield's use a one piece stock instead of the two piece stocks of the guns with full receivers like the Sharps, Spencer and Remington's.
They are all great looking and well designed. In my opinion, these are the most hansom of American made Sporting Rifles!

One word - elegant! Best looking of the Gemmer-type conversions.

It's a .45-70. I bought it assembled but not what I would call in the white ready for finish. I had someone do the case color on the breech block.

Whitney built some really nice sporting rifles on Trapdoor actions too. Most had early actions, full octagon barrels, and deluxe wood. I think they were mainly sold through SH&G.
