This has been in the works for a year or better...............

How would you like a Thuer® conversion that shoots modern ammo - that you can load and unload without removing the cylinder?

How about one that because of the chambering "is not chambered for commonly available commercial ammunition" ie; NOT A FIREARM by federal definition.

This is the "evolution of the Cap and Ball revolver" in that you can load it with your existing cap and ball supplies with the addition of some primers and a few cases. Yep...........

Here are a couple views of the installed Thuer® chambered for the 44 Thuer® cartridge:

Showing the "ported" ring and ported Pistol..........Narrow or slim port due to the rimless cartridge

This view shows the port is partially occluded in the SAFE position of the conversion ring

And completely closed in the FIRE position

FIRE position (firing pin view)

SAFE position (no firing pin just 3/16" of steel between the hammer and the cartridge)

On HALF COCK the port will align for both cartridge insertion and ejection

The IMPROVED Thuer® broken down to the four simple parts.........

Loading and Unloading

Prototype loading ring installed

This "die" both decaps the primer and bells the case mouth for the ball

Note the "step" that swages the case mouth slightly and the "nub" to center it on the rammer

This die seats the primer (there will be a spring loaded primer seater in the ring)

Next comes the Black Powder from your flask
You can lube over the ball in each chamber mouth or by inserting a Wonder Wad under the ball

The ball sits nicely in the belled case mouth

The Seating die

Rammed all the way it crimps

The loaded and crimped round!

The rimless case headspaces on the case mouth

Does this mean I'd hafta get some "black powder shooting supplies"  .  .  .  .  .  .   or just a little trailboss?

The Pathfinder

That is just amazing. You, sir, are a genius (10% inspiration, 90% perspiration). Is this a drop in, or does the face of the frame have to be modified to accept the ring? Any idea what and when, approximately, this would be available and set us back? ;D

Very interesting!  Will this be for 44's only, or will you develop a 36 cal too?

The reloading tools are still prototypes.........but will be produced soon.

This is a "drop in" but must be fitted by me, in fact the Thuer® as a two piece (think of loading it like an R&D cylinder) has been available a couple of years now (search this forum for the word: thuer). There are many options like; sculpting the right side of the barrel like the originals, porting, calibers, etc. so quoting must be done via email to :buckoff@windstream.net

There are a number of inaccuracies in this video but it will give you the history and use of an original Thuer conversion. My Thuer® and IMPROVED Thuer® do away with the ejection parts in the ring and use that location as a SAFETY. Both Thuer® conversions use rear loading cartridges.

There already is a Navy version using 41 Colt cases and .380 balls (6 shot).
The standard Thuer® utilizes the case with the rim.
The IMPROVED Thuer® has the case rim turned off.

Both can use a blown out 38 Special case.

WOW!!  Gary, just WOW!!

McGoon -  Ha!!  Shooting one of these with (gasp - choke - PUKE) smokeless ..... would be ...... sacrilege!!  Not to mention ..... Scandalous
and just plain wrong.  We'd have to recall your "good guy" button and banish you from the kingdom.  ;D
Trailboss indeed (Spits at the transgressors boot)  ::)

Oh my, but just a thought (oh, the PAIN).  Why not chamber it for 45 ACP cases and eliminate removing the rim form a 45 Colt??
Oh, right, cause then it would be a common and commercially available modern cartridge.
Duh   :P

Caffeine low light just came on ............ :o

45 Dragoon

Ha!!!!
Well then I'll just have ta look. I won't drive outta my county just to shoot (a good drive) when I got a gun range 10 mins. from my house. That's why all my guns are cartridge guns. (And, why I'm a hit when I go!!! I bring all the "pretty old metal guns"!!) Lol

The conversion Gary did for me is on an 1860 Belgium, made in 1959-60. I use 45 S&W cases and 45 Cowboy specials. The bore of the Belgium is very tight, .4485 so I size my bullets to .450". I use a Lee 200 gr. conical BP mold, no lube is required as I load the cartridges with APP.

My only regret was not having the piece engraved before I sent it to Gary for the conversion. He did an excellent re- blue on the Barrel, as well as the new conversion cylinder. My Belgium is the civilian model so the trigger guard/backstrap is Silver plated steel.
Quite a handsome piece indeed. It also helped that when I bought the piece several years ago it appeared to be in an unfired condition.

45 Dragoon

Thanks Hoof,
I would but there's this pesky law thing that says they can put me inna pokey if I fire a weapon in the out-of-doors in the city/county that I live in (unless it's for defence of course) . Wasn't like that when I was a kid.

Don't you think Trailboss would be OK? I've never shot it but have seen a lot on some of the forums. My normal powder is Tight Group. Just figured you may shoot some smokless but, maybe not.

What's with the "McGoon" thing?

Anyhow cowboy loads are cowboy loads and the 4140 prehard of these parts would be fine as long as you subscribe to shooting cowboy loads..................
