Crazy, Insane Idea

As I was cleaning up my Armisport Spencer from a cowboy match I was pondering how a cutoff might be rigged on one.  It wouldn't have to be a Stabler cutoff, just something to interrupt the the tube mag somehow that you could then remove/deactivate once you fire your 3 reloads.

I think doing your 3 reloads first as opposed to last would result in faster times.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

I can understand why you like shooting the Spencer in CAS but if you are looking to place high in the standings and you still want to shoot BP then you need to use a Henry or an 1866.  I know there are style points connected with the Spencer but they won't do anything for your final score.  I love shooting my Spencer for CW reenacting but for cowboy I always use my 1873 Winchester.
With that said I don't think that loading the 3 single feed rounds first will speed things up any and now you have an extra step to turn off the "stop feed device".  Not saying it wouldn't be fun just not faster than a Henry or 1866.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a handsome, and well preserved body; but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming...."WOW!... What a ride!"

Major,

I've been shooting the Spencer in SASS for 4 years as my only rifle.  A cut off would add many, many style points.

Besides I just like the idea.

If that is your idea of fun then go with it and have fun.

Thanks Major!  I was hoping you'd approve.

you can buy a stabler cutoff on line.  just drill the hole and go for it..

If you want a cut-off on the AS Spencer ,the Spencer style cut -off is the way to go .The Stabler cut-off will not work with the Lane type extractor and in my opinion the Spencer cut-off is a much improved system (cheaper to fit and no machining to fit)you will need to have one made with the slot long enough so the extractor can clear it when open(I shorten the extractor for this,it extracts just as well as the original full length AS extractor but I can now also use a longer OAL cartridge

Thanks Herbert,

My Marcott is in a storage pod.  This will give me incentive to unpack it.  Long over due.

Herbert is correct. Just buying the switch and a new screw won't make the Stabler work without the lower block being milled to add the contour groove that matches the switch. The Spencer cutoff is a much simpler modification and is fully reversible. Get your Marcott book out and you will see what we are talking about.
