This is especially addressed to those of you who have been to our National Muster featuring the "shoot through" stalking course.   I'm attempting to see how much interest there would be in doing such a course with earlier muzzle loading weapons i.e. American Plainsman.  I'm asking here first because you know how this sort of match works, and know how much fun it is.

I'm in, got a Musketoon and a Squareback 51 should anyone ever set a match up.

I've considered joining-but I don't have a suitable rifle/musket, although I do have some C&B revolvers.

Quick Fire

I'm in with my CVA Rocky Mountain rifle and a 51 navy.

Why would flint locks be out? Anyone saying they weren't around during the Plainsman era haven't done the research. Yes percussion guns became more popular, but flinters were still being made and sold into the 1870's.

Then it's not a group I'd join since they apparently no diddly squat about the firearms of the period other than what they read in some gun rag or some such which didn't have a clue since the actual history especially for the 1840-50 period that flintlocks were still popular. Despite the popularity of the 1841 Mississippi Rifle, it wasn't built in quantity until after the Mexican War, which was fought mainly with flintlocks on both sides.

Major 2,

That may depend on the maker/model type.
What manufacture model type do you have?

To be honest Dale and everyone, is there a reason you would have to follow their exact ideas?

Check the Approved Weapons List for the Plainsmen Society.  Nothing says you can't use a flintlock.  What they don't approve seems to be these modern so-called Hawken rifles that look nothing like the originals.  I think they're good with just about anything if you can prove it was used in that period.

Flintlocks are allowed.  Not sure what you've heard.

Approved List:

Rifles/Muskets/Trade Guns:  Any original or CORRECT reproduction of a rifle, musket, or trade gun originally produced post 1803.

Sorry if I opened a can of worms....

Several years ago I conversed with Caleb .... the (my)  Rifle is not a manufacture's piece ..

I built it .... from a purchased maple pre-sawn & partly inlet-ed for the barrel , the barrel is Green Mountain 32 Cal.
the Lock & trigger are Jim Chambers....   32 Cal. is a little light for plains work

I Built it as my personal prop for " Alamo the Price of Freedom " in 1984 ... I trust it would past muster ....

what I said was.... " My flintier is out, but my Henry's & Colt's allow my to roster .

I did not mean to imply ... 'All Flintlocks are out  :-\

Sorry

M 2,

My thought had more to do with the type of sights used. Several manufactures used both front and rear sights that were too modern for a primitive firearm they were suppose to emulate.
The light caliber could be an issue? Depending on the ranges being shot and weather.
This kind of venue I believe would , and this is just my opinion, fit the bill for your rifle.

I'm not but I could be. I could use my Henry, Spencer, 1861 or it would give me a reason to finish that Lyman Great Plains Rifle kit

Not in a cartridge gun!  I LOVE percussion revolvers......just getting back into shooting them.  I also picked up a Browning Mountain Rifle, so I should be good.
