16 Gauge BP Shotshell

Unable to find any reference to 16 gauge BP shot shell loads in plastic.  Anyone loading plastic?  If so, what are you using for charge, wad and lead?  Thanks for the thoughts and advice.  Sagerider aka Paledun

Haven't used my 16 for CAS for years.... But when I did I used Circle Fly wads, 1 1/8 over powder + 1 felt + one over shot, 1 1'8 oz shot, and varied the powder charge to make it all fit in the shell right. I was using mostly Pyrodex then for shotshells, only because you could get it cheap on clearance after deer season from Wally World. Don't remember the exact load anymore. I used the cheap black Remington hulls, they only lasted a couple of reloads before they got to burned up to use, or the Pyrodex caused the steel case heads to rust. Also, best to de-cap them immediately when you get home, otherwise they can be hard to get out due to corrosion.

I mostly use  Magtechs with homemade 14 gauge wads. I would not be afraid of loading plastic with appropriate fibre wads, but I have so few plastic cases as it is.

I keep the powder load on the mild side for cas. About 40 grains of FFFg or about 50 grains of FFg, both GOEX.

I use a dram scoop set to 2 1/2 drams. Federal case sized and primed. 1/8 nitro card and 1/2 wad. 110# column pressure. 1oz. shot. Roll or fold crimp to taste. 3/8 wad for Remington case.

I have acquired a good supply of paper hulls from an estate sale. probably later in the winter before I experiment with those.

Go with the "Square Load".  That is the same VOLUME of black powder as fine shot.  The column of the load can be adjusted by the wads chosen.  I prefer a spin down roll crimp load.  So, if you like 1oz loads, use that amount by volume of powder and adjust for performance.

I was going to mention this, but DD beat me to it. Dropping the powder somewhat will help to tighten patterns, but use enough to get killing velocity. (Irrelevant in CAS!)
