This is a follow up to the tread on the Remington-Lee 1879 Navy rifle.  I received the RL 1879 and the Winchester-Hotchkiss second model Navy rifle from RIA this week.  I promised photos and decided to include all Five Navy Contract bolt action rifles currently in my care.  So hope you enjoy the photos about 10 per arm showing both sides and ending with the open action.  They all have Navy inspection markings.  I tried to take photos of the martial markings on each but could not get them in focus.

Scout, what can I say...will you adopt me? Please?! ;D

Those are soooo cool!
Looking at the Winchester-Hotchkiss rifles-it appears tome that the designer of the Mosin Nagant must have seen one of them at one time, the bolt looks very similar.

I expect finances will probably prevent me from owning any period U.S. BP bolt guns, I'll have to be satisfied with seeking some of the European ones.

That many Navy 45/70 bolt actions in one place is really something to see-what a nice grouping you have there!

Well I added another one to the group, it arrived this week.  It's the second Navy purchase of the Remington - Lee Navy model 1879.  The first contract rifles were assembled by Remington using the Sharps manufactured actions and Springfield barrels and sights.  Then Remington assembled the rest of this model using Remington barrels and sights but they did not sell so they offered them to the Navy at a reduced price and the Navy purchased them.  The front sight is wider and takes the Remington bayonet with a wider slot instead of the standard model 1873 bayonet.  You can see from the photos the difference in the rear sight when comparing to the first Navy contract rifle, however it matches the rear sight on the Remington Keene Navy rifle which also requires a Remington bayonet to fit over the wider front sight.

I also updated the photos for the first Navy 1879 to show the left side of the rifle.  When taking photos of this rifle to show the comparison I noticed all the photos I had posted before were of the right side.

•   Remington – Lee Navy Rifle model 1879, Second Purchase, actions made by Sharps 1880, rifles assembled by Remington 1882 used rolling block barrel and sights, marked Lee Arms, 45-70 cal.
