I've got one period military dummy 6mm round for the 1895 Navy and I'm working on getting three dummy rounds for the Berthier. Had not really planned on shooting these two rifles.

  Oh I would be a tortured soul! Well, not the Berthier so much, but I have always wanted to try a Lee Navy!!! Someone custom loads the ammo for about $3.00 a shot, but I do know of a couple that came apart firing the victims handloads. I'm almost sure it was ammo related.

I feel the same, Charles I've only got a very few in my collection accumulation of guns I haven't shot, and most of them I will shoot someday, when I can overcome ammo or repair problems. Seems like time and money both interfere with things like that!

A Lee navy is on my wish list, but probably not going to happen, already got a Berthier(or 2) but they're somewhat more "experienced" looking than Cowtown Scout's Remington, While they're not exactly a "Swiss Watch", it is an accurate and fairly rugged rifle. I think the only flaw the French found was that the stocks weren't strong enough for grenade launching, so Lebels had to continue in that role until the Mas36 rifles came along.

   That's pretty interesting info about the grenade launching problem with the Berthiers-I didn't know about it.

    I was watching a show about the French Navy during WWII and I am certain the Sailors were in formation with full length Berthiers that had the turned down long bolt handle and protruding magazine like an Mle16. Did such a model exist?

I don't know if there was an official model like that-there was the "Indochine" model (I forget the year) that had a barrel longer than the carbine, but shorter than the full rifle, I believe it had a turned down bolt. The Lebel was considered too big for the Vietnamese troops, so they just lengthened the carbine. But there were not large numbers of them made.

The experts on the French rifles hang out on Gunboards; Kelt, 1886Lebel, and some others could tell if there was a Navy version with a turned down bolt. The thing about the French rifles is, they have been re-built and re-rebuilt so many times, especially during WWI, that you just have to determine what model it is from what configuration it is in now. So you can find Mle-16 marked receivers with three shot magazines, 1892 receivers or 07/15 receivers in Mle-16 configuration, etc etc etc. When they started with a pile of broken rifles, they put together whatever it took to make a functional weapon.

Added the following Smokeless Bolt Actions to those currently in my care:



•   Springfield model 1896, made 1897, .30 Army (30-40 Krag)

The 1896 rifle came with a model 1898 rear sight that had been modified to a model 1902 rear sight.  My 1898 rifle had a model 1896 rear site, so I traded sights on the rifles since the 1896 rifle was made in 1897 and the 1898 rifle was made in 1901.  The top rifle with the leather sling is the 1896 and the bottom rifle with the web sling is the 1898.



The top sight is the 1902 and the bottom sight is the 1896.
