The day for the main match of the gambler shoot has been moved back to sun the 6th due to a couple of conflicts. You can still come for the entire weekend. remember to dress as an old west gambler, and bring your pocket pistol!   jt

Jeff and I will be there. Plan on coming down on Sun and being there just for the day.  Reminder Books likes cash for the enter fee which is $10 or $15 dollars your choice. I asked Books and he said we would start at 10am Books time with safety meeting before. Those of you that  like playing cards and your not a good shooter this is your shoot. I went out and purchased a new 73 just for this event. And yes it has a 3 1/2 inch barrel it was hard taking a saw to a new gun but that is what happen when you are a gamer, or is it Taylors got a boat load of new guns in?

Books OToole

There will be 10 stages.  Three pocket pistol, one main match pistol and one main match rifle.  Round counts respectively are:  15, 5 & 10.  For those of you who think my math is flawed; the remaining five stages will be various types of poker.

Dress code is old west (NCOWS): Gambler/Dude attire is not required but is certainly encouraged.  [NO extra credit this year.]

Books

PS:  On the Pocket Pistol stages there will be a one second per stage penalty for full sized pistols with short barrels.  However there will be a one second per stage bonus for single action revolvers.

I will not be able to attend the Gambler shoot on the 6th of Sept because of a conflict of commitments. :'(

Windy City Joe

What is the reason for a one second per stage penalty for full sized pistols with short barrels? I don't remember us doing this in the past.  :o
Is this in the NCOWS Talley Book?

Major 2

Hmm that puzzle's me too

"On the Pocket Pistol stages there will be a one second per stage penalty for full sized pistols with short barrels.  However there will be a one second per stage bonus for single action revolvers. "

a Storekeeper or Sheriff with a 3 1/2" barrel  ( full size with short barrel  ) would be penalized ?

but given a bonus as it's a SAA   ???
when planets align...do the deal !

pony express

M2, seems like with that combo you'd break even.

Perhaps the bonus for the single action pistols is due to the fact most true pocket pistols shot at our matches are double action, such as the S&W lemon squeezer, so someone shooting say a S&W Baby Russian, which is single action, would be at a disadvantage.

PS, I sure wish I could afford to attend.  :'(

As stated below:

Major 2 asked if his Sheriff model with a 3 1/2" barrel  ( full size with short barrel  ) would be penalized? I have this same pistol.

Most pocket pistols can be shot double action or single action.

So, a double action full size frame pistol like a Welby with a short barrel would be penalized, and you would get a bonus for using a  large frame single action revolvers?

Wooly Dan

Hay guys Books response was a funy funy in response to me buying a new pistol. We are thinking way to much.

Books OToole

It is the opinion of the Match Director (Me), that full sized pistols that NCOWS says is a legal Pocket Pistol (which they are not) simply because it has a short barrel, have a distinct advantage over real pocket pistols.  Therefore a one second penalty will be assessed.

A large frame single action pistol would actually break even.  (A one second penalty would be assessed for being full sized and a one second bonus would be given for being single action.)

As this is a Novelty Match (Side Match) there is much more leeway in scoring etc.  Hell, one year the Gamber Match was won by a participant by stealing a bunch of chips from the bank.

This is supposed to be fun.

Have fun guys, dream up new and interesting matches. When I put on a match,
I'll add a pocket pistol, and maybe a buffalo gun, and  not the usual 10-10-4.
I once shot a Lonesome Dove shoot, it was totally different, I believe the winner
hit 60% of the targets!.

I'm confused, can anyone give me an example of the large frame short barrel "pocket pistol" both single and double action?

River City John

Avenging Angels popular now would be one.  Storekeeper's Model another, I suppose.

A Colt Store Keeper Model, or sometimes referred to as a Sheriff's model or a Merwin Hulbert Pocket Army for the single action . For the double action, how about a S&W  Double Action 1st Model.
There are numerous other examples of both.
