In my newly purchased Win 97 shotgun there is a small dent in the barrel. You can just see it barely from the inside of the barrel when using a flashlight. It is probably as expected on a gun from 1909, but just the same I  would like to ask you guys out there: Is this a problem when shooting with light ammo?

Blair

Mc,

Yes it can matter depending on the amount of dent that is in the bore.
There are bore "dent" removers for shotguns,
Not common among most gunsmiths, unless they deal with a lot of shot gunners. It can be an expensive set-up, considering the number of gages.
Check around for smiths that can do this kind of "dent pulling/dent removal", and see what they can say?

Yes, I understand, but when you look at my pictures would you say that this dent is something to worry about?

Blair

Mc,

Not from the outside of the barrel.
But, what does it look like on the inside?
The inside of the barrel is what matters to how it shoots

CAS  guns get bumped around.  My shotgun has several dents in the barrels and it shoots fine.  Unless it is very deep or structural don't worry about it.  The dent in your photo hardy even qualifies as a dent.  It is fine.

Well here I are again.  Piling On with Pettifogger.  Personal observation ....... That ain't a real dent.  Just a bump.  Not enough to be a structural problem.  It won't even affect your pattern.  I'm with Pettifogger.  Just ignore it.

Of course, if it would leave you with about an 18 1/8 inch barrel, whack that sucker off.  Of course, this comes from one with the nick-name ....... Hacksaw.  ::) ;D   He whom never met a barrel too SHORT  :o 8)

PS:  I don't like '97s.  Not really cowboy.  Suggest you trade that hummer off for a REAL cowboy shotgun.  Hammer Double.  Cimarron '78 or such.  See??  Fix'd it for ya.
