1 - Which is Better?  - I think the Remington is overall the better revolver, although the Colt is prettier

2 - Why Do You Prefer it? -  I think the Remington is a much more robust design and is the better revolver from the durability
                                        perspective.

3 - Do You Own Either? - I've owned both in the past, but shoot Ruger Old Army's now.  I'm am planning to buy another pair in the
                                    future, probably Remington's.

I own both
I prefer the 1860 Colt.   I think it handles fouling better.   I can shoot 50+ through the army with no drag and no issues.  I have to clean the cylinder pin on the Remington after about 20 shots.   I have converted my Remington and leave it as a cartridge revolver.  The Colt is still cap and Ball.

It is said that many of our modern complaints were known about early on by Remington.  Most of the main complaints  would have been quick, easy fixes but Remington elected to pass on them.  I have found that for play, it is easy to get around all but one fix and that is the @$(%*&^ grips.  I think a small grip filler might work but then the gun would be illegal for SASS.

I have four '60 Colts (Piettas) and 2 Rem '58's.  Which is better?  Have no idea.. mine all shoot great.  Two of my army 60's have been converted using Kirst Konverters 45LC with loading gate and extractors... look just like the Richards-Mason revolvers.  The two '58's have also been converted using Kirst Konverters 45LC with loading gate and extractors.  I shoot Outlaw on the cowboy stages and both the colts (Piettas) and the '58's (Uberti) do very well.  I really have no preference.  I like all.  They all have the 8" barrels... every now and then I put the C&B cylinders back in the 58's and shoot the HB.  The only preference comes when it is cleaning time... the army 60's are easier to clean than the 58's.

My vote is for the Rem NMA for its ability to deal with blown caps and a stronger design.

That said, the 1860 Army is easier to clean and weighs less. There is also the option to change out barrels to use different sights, length, and styles.

If I had to have only one, it would be the Rem NMA because of the issue with caps.

45 Dragoon

Wow!!

That's a lot to give up when all you need to do is install a cap post!
You forgot the "open top will run longer without the cylinder binding " thing!  (Just yanking yer chain a little!)
I think the arbor is stronger than the Remie frame (I think its been scientifically proven but folks keep saying it trying to make it true I guess). The Remie is very thin in the plunger area.
I've never bent a brass framed open top just loading it , I have bent a Remie though.

The Remington is a great design for production purposes though. It's much easier to screw in a barrel than produce a barrel assy.
I do like my Remies, don't get me wrong. I'm just trying to be fair.

Ah My Dear CoffinMaker -

All one needs to do is to apply that whirling grinding wheel to either the inside curve of the gripframe or the knuckle until a more comfortable outcome is achieved ....  ;)

But perhaps you should try the Rogers and Spencer! I got an R&S  pile-o-parts basket case grip and frame and barrel for very little and have been playing about with them, I find that even tho the thing is ugly as the dickins, and has a weird cylinder reqmt,  it is remarkably comfortable! If only I had known that while they were still available .... The R&S design also allows one to play about with the grip frame, as does the Colt Open Top design, which affords more possible accommodation via chop-and-braze efforts :-)

Ah Perfesser, a good good Evening to You indeed.

I can readily appreciate your reference to the Rogers and Spencer.  Alas, I don't have one.  Nor a pair.  After all, it does take two to tangle as it were.

However, I do have a plethora of Colt Reproductions, of which I frequently mix and match Gripframes just for ........ fun. :o  I've also found, there are enough grip Combinations, I can come up with some real strange looking guns.  However strange, some of them are seriously comfortable to shoot.  As opposed to a Remington, which, IS NOT!!

The only way I could find a Remington to be comfortable, I would have to attack it with sharp, rotary machines and remove a surprising amount of it's butt.  The other suggestion, to modify my middle finger to fit, is somewhat distasteful.  Doesn't like the taste of blood, he doesn't.  Also some sensitive to ..... pain.  Besides, I do believe the chunk I removed would just grow back and I'd just have to do it all over again. :P  For a gun I don't like.  Not to mention the work to make it work with a Capper.   ::)  Ugly things ... Remington.  Idk.

Speaking of modified butts...my only functional Remington, a 35 yr old Pietta NM Army, was finished from a kit back when I was in college. The blank grips were enormous. I removed a lot of wood the grips and made it quite a good fit to my hand...and a pretty good handling gun. I bobbed the barrel 15 yrs ago to make it a belly gun...and have used as a "pocket" (big pocket) pistol for NCOWS matches. My Main guns are Colt-type, which I favor over the Remington. I also have a second "gifted" Remington. Its more/less a basket case awaiting a its day in my "miracle" workshop.

Anyone having a NM Remington and not satisfied with the grip should consider trimming/slimming the wood and refinish.
