Dang Roger, I just saw this and will be praying for a full recovery.

Is it possible that a quick jerk of the bolt or something overcame the firing pin return spring and let the firing pin hit the primer while out of battery? I have heard of that happening.

Cliff, thanks. 

Further, the only jerk involved was the jerk trying to clear the weapon.  This was all me and not the weapon.  If you are dumb enough you can render the best weapon system unsafe.  I have complete fairy in the '73, me not so much anymore.  Worst part of the whole mess is I'll miss the Nationals.  Had hoped th go just to watch but it's only a few days after the next surgery.  Won't be traveling yet.
