Hi, Folks:
I put this in the Leather area as I think thats the material I am looking at. Originally I thought these scouts were wearing some kind of boot. But I took a closer look at this shot of James Baker and another one of Charles Sobie and they seem to be wearing some kind of legging bound with cord at the knee. Any information about these items would be much appreciated.

An early form of gaiter.  These were probably used most often in heavy brush or cactus country to protect the legs from thorns.  They may have been well suited for protection against rattlesnakes, also.

Major 2

they are Botas de Alas or Bota's for short

Spanish & Mexican origin, very popular with Vaquero's & even Dragoons during the Mex. war.
worn by scout & cowpunchers as well

Hi Bruce,
If you use the search function and type Bota, you will find several pages.   One has several patterns shared by Chuck Burrows that are real user friendly.   I have loved the look of these since I was a kid.

Here is the one with the pattern.

Here is a post showing the ones I made following the pattern.

I had these done maybe 15 or so years ago.  Photo isn't too good, but you can basically see them, and the conchos holding them.

"I have, in my day, thieved cattle, your lordship. But none that were under my watch" ("Is that what passes for honor with a MacGregor", Earl of Montrose), "What passes for honor with me, is likely not the same as with your Lordship, when my word is given, it is good"
