Colt Cowboy Model

There is one of these Colts at my local dealer and I am looking for advice on the quality of them. It seems to have the transfer bar system like Ruger. Were there any problems as I was told by the dealer that they were made only for a short time. When was production on these? Thanks in advance for any information you can give me.

Save your money and buy a used Colt Single Action Army - you'll be leagues ahead.

Most of the comments on the Cowboy come from people that have never owned or shot one.  They were Colt's attempt to come up with a more reasonably priced single action for the cowboy market.  Like many new products some of the early ones had some QC problems.  However, the later ones work just fine.  They made some prototype .38s, but the  only ones that ever hit the dealers's shelves were .45s.  The .45s had the same problem the regular Colt SSA in .45 has -- the chamber throats are oversized compared to the bore.  Once you figure that out and load accordingly they work fine.  Big problem now is that there are NO spare parts.  IF anything were to break it would be hard getting it fixed.  I have an all blue model with faux Ivory grips that came from the custom shop and it is a nice looking piece.  The prices on these things has gone up the past several years.

Never owned one..handled many , shot a few....

Transfer bar , investment cast in Romania ... case color , most had abysmal wood fit ...

introduced at Shot in "98" lasted about 4 years is all ...

if you have one,  might be best to have 2nd for parts

I had one that broke a piece that worked the transfer bar and I never could find parts for it.

I enjoyed reading the posts about overseas manufacture (etc., etc., etc.) of the Colt "Cowboy" model....especially since I've seen Colt's operations....parts bins, etc. ...production assembly & finish (with my own eyes)....Circa 2000 - 2007....in Hartford, CT.

On one visit I helped put a few finishing touches on GW Bush's pair of revolvers, too while I visited the Custom shop.....Gluing the ivory-grips to be specific.  Least I could do for my my 12th cuz.
