You might have a better luck with 2" seasoned oak, but the currently available 1 1/2" sapwood lumber available today-no way!

Wasn't shooting for group as much as penetration.  Five shots would have torn
out the center portion and negated any chance to see individual effects.  ;)

I think that one might not be safe behind 3  2x6's since Winchester claimed that the 44 WCF soft lead bullet would penetrate 9 3/4" thick boards (almost 7" of penetration!)

OK, why not use wet phone books, mind you they are getting hard to find these days.
Was that 7" of penatration at 100yds

Why not just use a pile of dirt or a hill for a barrier? I wouldn't even consider using wood as the barrier, regardless of what kind of wood you use outdoors it's going to wear out or rot and shoot through eventually.

Railroad cross ties should work!

Lafitte :D

No they don't.  Used them for backing on our little range at NWS Seal Beach.  1/6 .45 Colt and 1/3 .357 made it through dry ties at 20 yards.

BTW, Second Chance vests were about 95% penetrated by those same rounds.

Phone books certainly aren't hard to find in my area. There's about 4-5 companies printing competing phone books. I deliver the blasted things on my mail route, and people just leave them in their box, or throw them in the ditch. When they distribute them to the Post Office boxes, they always make sure to put extra trash cans in the lobby, most never make it out the door.

Maybe they should re-name them "no chance" vests.

I'm told by a retired cop friend / fraternity brother, that they have become more resistant to some things in the past 40 years... but they still are no where near 100% bullet proof.

The ones we used in 'Nam wouldn't stop anything but near-spent fragments of various kinds and descriptions.  Mostly they contributed to fatigue and heat stroke.

Times have changed.  Most ballistic vests will stop most handgun rounds.  Usually.

Griff, that "usually" is what makes me pucker up.  Been shot once, not fatally, and didn't care for it much.

Yes, even with a vest, I do not choose to stand in front someone who is shooting at me. However, when people may choose to shoot at me, you can bet I wear one.  It's a bit like wearing a seatbelt.  I don't go looking for accidents, but if one comes my way, I plan to be wearing a seatbelt.

I'm like the old Irishman who said if he knew where he was going to die he'd never go near the place.   ;D

Me neither, or even if I knew where I was going to get hurt... or even frightened.  Wouldn't go near it.
