I really need to stop looking at Gunbroker.  I was looking for a good Mauser to make an early era sporting rifle out of and I wandered into a Peruvian Mauser in .30-06.  It's a dead ringer for the Gewehr 98 German marines carried in Peking.  I'm going to fight this one off, as I don't need any more uniform projects!

I try to stay away from there, especially when broke.

Ned, German Marines in Peking during the siege had GEW88s. The Osprey book on Boxer Rebellion has several errors, and Seebattalione with Gew98s is one of them.

Picture believed to be the III Seebattalion at the end of the Seige, rifles are GEW88s, Bayonets are the brass hilted S-71 sword bayonet(O how I want one of those to go with my Commission rifle! But they seem to go for about as much as the rifle, now.)

First major use of GEW98s was the East Asia Expeditionary Force, which arrived in China after the Siege was over.

Good!  An even better reason I don't need one!  (Of course, there's still the "88"........)

But on the other hand, there's still the Expansion Era match, would be perfect for those same Seebattalion on Tsingtau prior to WWI, as well as all the other little colonial wars the Germans got into during that time.

Edit: And if you go for after 1908, you could use a Luger, too!

Hmmmmmmm!

(Thinks to self)
The Swiss were the first nation to adopt the Luger as a military arm, 1900 . . . 8)

John, I really think you should get one of those Swiss Lugers.  I'd really like to shoot one!

Don't they breed in the gun safe? Every once in a while I open the door and low and behold there's a new one in there. I have no idea how it got in there  ::)

Why, just the other day I got in the safe and there was a brand new Beretta M9 in there. I guess I shoulda built a better fence to keep those d@mned Italians rifles away from my good American pistols.  ;D 8)
