It's been a while since I was last here. Have missed a lot of topics  >:( :(

I am after a roll crimper for plastic shotshells. I am unable to locate one here in Australia and on ebay.
Wondering if anyone on here knows where I can get one. Tried making one, but not all that successful.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards,
Judge Lead.

I don't use by BPI roll crimper anymore, its for sale cheep! there is only one crimp roller, making for lop sided crimps.

I successfully employ a Lyman (12 ga.) and a Precision (16 ga.)

I have both the precision reloading crimper and also the BPI crimper.   The Precision Reloading version looks like it should work better, but they both seem to work roughly the same.

I also have used both a drill press and also a cordless drill. My drillpress is in a workshed in the back yard, and I normally reload in a workshop in the basement, so the drill press isn't all that convenient most of the time. Sometimes in warm weather I will bring mostly loaded rounds out side and use the drill press. I guess the coolest setup would be to have a reloading bench mounted table top drill press but I already have way too much stuff on my reloading bench already.

Roll crimps are way cool.  They hold on to the shot column just a mite longer and give the Holy Black a bit more time to get to maximum burn.  So, I have roll crimp tools for .410ga, 20ga, 16ga, 12ga and 10ga.  Yup, I shoot all of them for SASS matches cept for the lil .410ga.  That one's for my Grandson Cowboy.  I want to get him a 28ga but I don't know if clubs would allow it.  I've got my eye on a nice lil CZ 28ga SxS that would really work well. . .

But all that said, the roll crimp is a good closure.  I like to use a roll crimp over a pie crimp for a totally firm closure.

There are a couple of antique ones on ebay right now and this one says he will ship to Australia.  I have one like this and works fine.

I  have a roll crimper that is used in conjunction with a drill, but I have also had good luck using an antique roll crimper on plastic shot shells as well as paper ones .  I just put the crimper in a vise, put the shell in and crank the handle fast.  Works fine and is more fun than the drill method.  I have had zero problems with them when I cut the pie crimp off first.  This allows use of older plastic shells with worn out crimps but which are still sound otherwise.  I loaded these for an old original Winchester '87 which had a short chamber.

I cut fired shells to 2 1/2 inch for my older shotguns.

I have also salvaged older type AAs to 2 3/8 inch. Not only does it eliminate most of the split but I can now get an extra shell in the Win '97 mag for Wild Bunch. 8)

IMO the best roll crimps are made by the antique handheld device.  I have the drill press device and do not like it.

I used to use an antique roll crimper but then I graduated to drill crimp tools.  The drill tools do a mite better job at putting a little taper on the closure and the heat seems to make a crimp that holds set better.  Also, since I crimp a variety of sizes of shot shells simply changing the drill tool is quick and easy.  I use a MEC Supersizer to hold my hulls under the bench top drill press for nice straight crimps.  I have some old factory shot shells and my crimps compare very favorably with the old factory ones.

FWIW, I've noticed that shotgun slug ammo is closed with the roll crimp.
