Anyone modified their spencer for optics?  I am planning on brazing a mount on my 1868NM rifle to accept a spare red dot scope I picked up in trade.

You had me initially. A co-worker owned and recently sold his low serial # 1860 carbine. Besides the stock having severl large cracks, the end of the barrel had round tube brazed in place of the original sight. It was said that it was done early in the guns life and period correct. but I didn't like it.

I have to admit that I fell for it too.  We keep seeing things that are almost as crazy.  It was a relief to learn that it was a joke!

I like to see how the wind blows before I post on such topics.
I am glade I waited, otherwise I too would have become a victim of the First of April.

It does help.  I used silicone to hold it in place.

Walksfire

Interesting and temporary. A small piece of copper tubing, cut to slide over the original sight. then siliconed in place. Good to know. My spencer hits the target about 2 inches to the right, when I line up. Is there anyway to alter the back sight to correct this. I know there is a piece of spring steel under it. But I am concerned about altering anything.

You should be able to drift your rear sight to correct this.  Just be sure to use a wooden dowel or other soft object to protect the metal and patina (if an original gun).

Mine did this too.   cut a thin piece of lead, hammer it flat and put it under the rear sight to tilt it in the direction you want it to go, then use a razor to cut it along the sight base.  totally invisible, and centered the shot.   doesn't hurt the gun either.
mine has been there for hundreds of shots and hasn't moved yet.  I forgot it was there until I saw this....

Hi Guys,

Accuracy seems to be of great concern to all of you in this thread . . . a very close friend of mine, Hugo First has invented a contraption that will guarantee a bullseye every time you shoot your Spencer.

It's only 4" long and fits on the end of your barrel and is secured with three tiny set screws.  The item is solid metal and all you have to do is unthread it from the unsecured end and extend it out to your target, be it 50 yards, 100 yards or 300 yards, which is the maximum it can extend to . . .  Now, when you fire your Spencer, the bullet will travel along this elongated or extended pipe all the way to your target and hit BULLSEYE ;D ;D each and every time ::)

When you have finished target shooting just push the elongated or extended pipe back into its closed original length of 4" and go home with a smile on your face ;)

BTW, my friend has just finished writing another one of his Civil War books dealing with Union strategy entitled, OVER THE CLIFF, by Hugo First.

Hey two flints.   I just finished a casting session looking for the right lead tin mixture to get my 1865 Burnside Spencer to shoot into one inch.  and I saw your post.
THATS A GREAT IDEA.  DOES YOUR FRIEND HAVE A BLUEPRINT ON HIS 'DEVICE'?
OR A PICTURE WE CAN COPY.   ::)

ok..maybe I'm a little anal..(my wife would use another word, but close to anal) :o about my Spencer.
(are we going to have 'that thing' on the table again tonight while we watch TV?)
hey Honey,  it's this thing or a blonde...your choice...take your time....
is NOT the right reply...just thought I'd let you all know.... ???

    Ok..so it's not a target rifle, but I'm a nut anyway....Ken

Two Flints

Ken,

Every time I have a Western on TV or even a Civil War movie, my wife will ask me, "Any Spencers?"  So we both do the same thing . . . I always look for Spencers when watching TV Westerns . . .

BTW, Hugo is trying to get a patent for his shooting guide, as he calls it ::) ::)

great..if he gets the patent and manufactures it.  I'm an old Factory Sales Rep.  who knows where ALL the gun-shops are located.  Ask him if he wants a rep to carry the line.    ::)

i'm getting tired of being retired and just loading and shooting all the time....

Herbert

In one of Clint Eastwoods Italian movies he has a scoped Spencer sporting rifle in at least one shot

KEN S

Na, that was a Sharps...a non factory cartridge conversion of a CW carbine.
Jose Wales...the river scene where he shoots the rope.
OK OK>..I'm  a nut about movie guns..

Both the GB&U as well as Jose Wales used Sharps Rifles.
